O'Brien packed for Irish Oaks

Aidan O'Brien saddles six of the 14 runners who will line up for the $789,000 Irish Oaks at the Curragh on Sunday, the most prominent among them the English Oaks runner-up Moonstone, a Dalakhani filly who is the 2-1 favorite for the 1 1/2-mile classic even though she is still a maiden.

A half-sister to L'Ancresse, runner-up in the Irish Oaks and Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, Moonstone was 3 3/4 lengths behind Look Here at Epsom, but she was 2 3/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Katiyra that day.

Raven's Pass can take Jean Prat

Raven's Pass, banging hard at the top level all his career, can finally break through the Group 1 barrier at Chantilly on Sunday in the one-mile $631,000 Prix Jean Prat, in which he will face 15 rivals from four countries.

Raven's Pass, trained by John Gosden, was second to the world's highest rated miler, Henrythenavigator, by three-quarters of a length in Royal Ascot's St. James's Palace Stakes last time. Jimmy Fortune, who teamed with Gosden to ride Lucarno to victory in the Princess of Wales's Stakes on Thursday, has the ride.

O'Brien on pace to recapture Group 1 record

NEW YORK - With 12 Group 1 victories under his belt through July 11, Aidan O'Brien is well ahead of schedule to break Bobby Frankel's world mark of 25 Group 1 or Grade 1 triumphs in a single year. Lucarno wires Princess of Wales's at Newmarket

Lucarno returned to the form that won him the classic St. Leger Stakes last fall as he led throughout to take the Group 2, $198,000 Group 2 Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday.

Trained by John Gosden for his breeder, George Strawbridge, the 4-year-old son of Dynaformer was given a brilliant ride by Jimmy Fortune to defeat the fast-closing defending title-holder and 2-1 favorite, Papal Bull, by 1 1/4 lengths despite carrying a five-pound penalty for his Group 1 St. Leger triumph.

Nahoodh wins Falmouth Stakes

Jockey Frankie Dettori brought Nahoodh with a late run to win the $393,000 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, giving the 3-year-old filly her first Group 1 triumph. A 10-1 shot, she defeated Infallible by 1 3/4 lengths after the doors to victory were opened by the last-minute withdrawal of Darjina because of rain-softened ground and by a second consecutive poor effort by Finsceal Beo.

Trained by Mark Johnston, Nahoodh covered the Falmouth's straight mile on good to soft ground in 1:38.60.

Tattersalls nmbers down

A Fantastic Light broodmare carrying a Sakhee foal sold for about $411,600 as the top-priced horse Tuesday at the opening day of the Tattersalls July sale in Newmarket, England.

The 5-year-old mare, Welsh Cake, sold for 200,000 guineas to Mike Caddy's Horizon Bloodstock on behalf of Caddy's farm, Heatherwold Stud, in Berkshire. A daughter of the Green Desert mare Khubza, she is a half-sister to two group winners, Trans Island and Welsh Diva.

Kevin and Sue Mercer's Usk Valley Stud consigned Welsh Cake to the auction.

A Fantastic Light broodmare carrying a Sakhee foal sold for about $411,600 as the top-priced horse Tuesday on opening day of the Tattersalls July sale in Newmarket, England.

Anna Pavlova right back

Anna Pavlova will be wheeled back on just five days' rest from one Group 2 to another when she challenges males in the $198,000 Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday.

Anna Pavlova, a 5-year-old daughter of Danehill Dancer who was the 3 1/4-length winner of the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock Park on Saturday, will be tested at the same 1 1/2 miles in the Princess of Wales, which will be run on Newmarket's July Course.

Aga Khan in Australian venture

Prominent Australian nursery Arrowfield Stud, which stands popular sire Redoute's Choice, has launched a venture with the Aga Khan to breed and sell yearlings at Australian auctions.

Under the program, the Aga Khan has sent six mares to Australia, where they will be bred to Arrowfield stallions. Arrowfield, which is owned by John Messara, and the Aga Khan will point the resulting foals for Australia's select yearling auctions.
