Musir gives De Kock another UAE Derby win

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Age, experience on two continents, and a crafty ride by jockey Christophe Soumillion gave Musir an expected victory in the $2 million United Arab Emirates Derby.

World Cup win puts 'Gloria' on map in U.S.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Stefan Friborg joked last week that when he got involved in racing a few years ago, his enthusiasm was such that he found it easier to buy four horses at a time instead of one. Not long after that habit developed, the Swedish-born, Brazil-based oil executive found himself with a stable of more than 100 horses.

Saturday at Meydan, Friborg was happy with a more singular result, the nose that separated his Gloria de Campeao from Lizard's Desire at the finish of the $10 million Dubai World Cup, the world's richest race.

Gloria de Campeao by a nose in Dubai World Cup

Andrew Watkins
Gloria de Campeao gets his nose down on the wire to win a three-way photo finish in the $10 million Dubai World Cup.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - When Gloria de Campeao and Lizard's Desire hit the wire together in Saturday's $10 million Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse, it looked like pacesetter Gloria de Campeao had suffered the toughest of beats.

Lizard's Desire's jockey Kevin Shea thrust his right hand in the air in celebration, thinking he had caught Gloria de Campeao in the last stride.

Shea got it wrong. Glorida de Campeao had held on to win the world's richest race by a nose, paying $52.40 in United States betting pools.

Al Shemali upsets Duty Free

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Al Shemali was considered good enough as a 3-year-old in 2007 to start in races such as the English 2,000 Guineas and Irish Derby. The idea was correct, the year was wrong.

Al Shemali could not win at that level, back then. It was not until Saturday's $5 million Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Meydan Racecourse that Al Shemali scored the definitive win of his career. Few saw it coming.
