Lillie Langtry tops deep cast for Falmouth Stakes

The Falmouth Stakes, a Group 1, $280,000 mile for fillies and mares, opens Newmarket's July meeting with a bang on Wednesday when two-time 1000 Guineas winner Special Duty squares off against Lillie Langtry, winner of Royal Ascot's Coronation Stakes. Two other group race winners at the Royal meeting, Strawberrydaiquiri and Rainfall, make this a special race in which the eight runners all sport Racing Post Ratings as high as 117 but none lower than 113.

Twice Over proves uncatchable in Eclipse

Twice Over led his four rivals a merry dance in the $750,000 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park on Saturday as he led virtually every step of the way in the 1 1/4-mile Group 1 as the 13-8 favorite. Two lengths clear at the quarter pole after having set a fast pace under Tom Queally, the 4-year-old son of Observatory weakened visibly in the later stages but held on gamely for a half-length victory over the 33-1 outsider Sri Putra.

Lope de Vega shortens up to mile for Prix Jean Prat

Dual classic winner Lope de Vega will be tested by Dick Turpin in the Group 1, $500,000 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly on Sunday.

The one-mile race for 3-year-olds represents a big cut-back in distance from the 1 5/16-mile French Derby, but one Lope de Vega should be able to handle. Earlier this season, he captured the one-mile French 2000 Guineas.

Fillies dominate French race for first-timers

Deauville's four-day July meeting that serves as a table setter for its prestigious August meeting opened on Thursday with the seaside track's annual juvenile oddity, the listed Prix Yacowlef for horses making their racing debuts. Won in the past by Riverman, Dahlia, Miswaki, and Machiavellian, it has been dominated in recent years by fillies.

On Thursday, fillies filled the first five places as the Robert Collet-trained Wizz Kid, a daughter of Prix Morny winner Whipper, beat Katerini by 1 1/2 lengths, getting the straight five furlongs in a stakes record 57.90 seconds.

Twice Over looks solid vs. Dar Re Mi in Eclipse

Plumania noses out Youmzain at Saint-Cloud

Youmzain suffered yet another heartbreaking defeat at Saint-Cloud on Sunday when the three-time Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe runner-up lost the Group 1, $493,000 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud by a nose to Plumania. Rated in last by Richard Hughes in the field of seven, Youmzain rallied strongly through the final furlong but lost the bob to the 6-1 winner.
