Japan’s Thoroughbred breeding industry appears unscathed by quake, tsunami

The center of Japan’s Thoroughbred breeding industry - home to such American-bred champions as Azeri, Silver Charm, and Charismatic - appears to have escaped the nation’s largest-ever earthquake with relatively little damage, according to French bloodstock agent Patrick Barbe.

Dubai Duty Free prep goes to Rileyskeepingfaith

Rileyskeepingfaith gave Godolphin a victory in the Group 2, $250,000 Zabeel Mile at Meydan on Thursday night. The last of six local preps for the $5 million Dubai Duty Free went to the gelded British-bred son of Hunting Lion by 2 1/4 lengths over Fareer, with Fanunalter a late closing third, 1 1/4 lengths further back.

Ridden by Ahmed Ajtebi, the winner covered the mile on good ground in 1:37.89.

Dubai Duty Free possibles get final shakedown

The Group 2, $250,000 Zabeel Mile at Meydan in Dubai on Thursday night will be the last of six local preps for the $5 million Dubai Duty Free on March 26.

With most of the principals for the Duty Free already having been decided, the Zabeel looks like a contest for those scrambling for one of the last few places left in the race.

Beauty Flash best in Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup at Sha Tin

Beauty Flash added his name to an already crowded Dubai Duty Free field when he won the Group 1, $770,000 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup at Sha Tin on Sunday. Ridden by Gerald Mosse, he came from just off the pace to lead inside the quarter pole and held gamely in a stiff drive to defeat Sunny King by a half-length, with former Hong Kong mile champ Good Ba Ba back in seventh. The time for the one-turn seven furlongs on good ground was 1:21.74.

Barbados Gold Cup goes to Zoom on disqualification

Zoom, a locally based 6-year-old gelding, was elevated to first in Saturday's Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup in Bridgetown, Barbados, after fellow local Show Me the Money was disqualified.

In a rarity for the 30-year-old event, the biggest race in the Caribbean, the Barbados-based Show Me the Money, who crossed the wire first at 10-1 odds, was ruled guilty of inteferring with another local, 7-2 third choice Apostle, in the early stretch of the race and was demoted to 11th place.

Twice Over moved into the Dubai World Cup catbird seat with a decisive victory in the Group 2, $300,000 Maktoum Challenge at Meydan on Thursday night. Trained by Henry Cecil for Juddmonte Farms, the 6-year-old son of Observatory rallied widest of all to defeat the Mike de Kock-trained Musir by 2 3/4 lengths with Team Valor’s Gitano Hernando third, a nose behind the runner-up. Twice Over, who had not run since Oct. 16 when winning Newmarket’s 1 1/4-mile, Group 1 Champion Stakes, was immediately installed as the general favorite by British bookmakers for the March 26 World Cup.

Melynk bids for third Barbados Gold Cup win with Safety Zone

Safety Zone and Grand Cash head a field of 12 for Saturday’s 30th Sandy Lane Gold Cup at the Garrison Savannah in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The Gold Cup, worth $115,000, is the biggest race in the Caribbean and contested at about 1 1/8 miles on the turf.

Owner Eugene Melnyk seeks his third Gold Cup, this time with Safety Zone, a 7-year-old son of King Cugat that he claimed for $40,000 last October through trainer Mark Casse.

Safety Zone promptly won the Labeeb Stakes at one mile on the Woodbine turf in his first start for Melnyk three weeks after being claimed.
