Red Cadeaux, the winner of the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup in May, will be favored to win his fourth stakes in Thursday’s Group 2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket, the first day of the three-day July meeting.

There are Group 1 stakes on Friday (the Falmouth Stakes) and Saturday (July Cup) at Newmarket.

A 6-year-old gelding trained by Ed Dunlop, Red Cadeaux has lost his last two starts, finishing second in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Epsom on June 2 and third in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 23.

Nathaniel made a triumphant return to the races Saturday at Sandown, holding off Farhh to capture the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes in his first start since last Oct. 15.

Nathaniel, a Galileo colt owned by Lady Rothschild and Newell Park Stud, ranked among the better European 3-year-olds of 2011, his most important win coming in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last July. And given his stout performance Saturday, he might well turn out to be among the better older horses in 2012.

So You Think was to have started heavily favored Saturday in the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park in England, but he was reported lame Thursday, and word of his impending absence from the Eclipse soon gave way to a report of So You Think’s retirement. So You Think will immediately go into quarantine and soon be shipped to Australia to stand the 2012 breeding season there, announced his connections, trainer Aidan O’Brien and an ownership group headed by the Coolmore operation.

English trainer John Gosden and jockey William Buick had an outstanding June, winning five races at Royal Ascot from June 20-23 and two stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. Sunday, their success extended to Ireland where the 4-year-old filly Izzi Top won the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh.

The race did not live up to full expectations, however.  There were three late scratches, including Was, the English Oaks winner; Maybe, who was third in the English 1000 Guineas, and the outsider Bible Belt.

Camelot won for the fifth time without a defeat and survived his first trip over a heavy, laboring course, with his win Saturday evening in the Irish Derby at the Curragh giving trainer Aidan O’Brien his seventh straight victory in that Group 1 race.

Camelot, a winner in both his runs at 2, now has captured the English 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby, and the Irish Derby at age 3. Saturday, closing from fourth in a five-horse field, he beat Born to Sea by two lengths after the runner up tracked him and briefly made him work to maintain a lead in the homestretch.

Led by English Oaks winner Was, trainer Aidan O’Brien has a formidable trio of 3-year-old fillies by Galileo in Sunday’s Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland.

The race may have ramifications for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 2. The $240,000 Pretty Polly Stakes is part of the Breeders’ Cup’s Challenge program, offering a fees-paid berth to the BC Filly and Mare Turf to the winner, provided she is nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program.

Aidan O’Brien has trained the winner of the Irish Derby for six years in a row, and among his three entrants for this year’s edition of the race is Camelot, currently the leading 3-year-old in Europe by a vast margin. The calculus seems crystal-clear: Camelot will win Saturday evening’s Group 1 race at The Curragh.

Black Caviar’s narrow victory in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes on Saturday at Royal Ascot came despite the mare racing with muscle injuries, it was discovered Sunday. The undefeated Australian mare, 22 for 22 in her career, has entered quarantine and will return home in coming weeks, but immediate post-race speculation about imminent retirement was premature, with Black Caviar’s connections now contemplating another campaign this fall, which is spring on Southern Hemisphere time.
