Kingman proves adept on soft turf in Prix Jacques le Marois

The brilliance of Kingman extends to major races run on soft turf.

Sunday, Kingman emphasized his status as Europe’s leading miler with a comprehensive win in the $810,000 Prix Jacques le Marois, the top mile race of the summer meeting at Deauville, France. The Jacques le Marois was the fourth consecutive Group 1 win for Kingman, who was not a definite runner until hours before the race.

There was concern about the soft turf at Deauville following rain in recent days, but owner Khalid Abdullah gave his approval to run Kingman.

Kingman odds-on choice in Prix Jacques le Marois

Kingman, who has emerged as Europe’s dominant 3-year-old miler this summer, will be a heavy favorite to win his fourth consecutive Group 1 race in Sunday’s Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville, France.

The Prix Jacques le Marois is part of the Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In program, offering a fees-paid berth for the winner to the BC Mile at Santa Anita on Nov. 1.

Royal Ascot meet gets new Group 1 race for 3-year-olds

The 2015 Royal Ascot meeting will include a new Group 1 race for 3-year-olds worth $630,000, the racecourse announced Wednesday.

The yet-to-be-named six-furlong race will be run on the Friday of Royal Ascot race week and will take the place of the Buckingham Palace Stakes, a seven-furlong handicap. The title “Buckingham Palace Stakes” will be retained for a future race at the track.

Garswood wins first Group 1 race in Prix Maurice de Gheest

Garswood, winless for more than a year, recorded the first Group 1 victory of his career in Sunday’s $420,000 Prix Maurice de Gheest over 6 1/2 furlongs on turf at Deauville, France.

Ridden by Gerald Mosse, Garswood (11-1) raced in the middle of the 14-horse field for the first half-mile and moved into contention with a quarter-mile remaining. Racing wide on the straightaway course, Garswood took the lead in the final furlong and won by a half-length over Thawaany, a 4-year-old filly. Fiesolana (18-1) finished third, 1 1/2 lengths behind Thawaany.

Aljamaaheer, Gregorian square off in Prix Maurice de Gheest

Aljamaaheer and Gregorian, third in Group 1 sprints in England this summer, are part of a field of 13 stakes winners in Sunday’s $420,000 Prix Maurice de Gheest over 6 1/2 furlongs on turf at Deauville, France.

The Group 1 Gheest drew a field of 15 and is run on a straight course.

Aljamaaheer was third in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot in June and ninth in the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket on July 12. Gregorian was third in the July Cup. Both the Diamond Jubilee and July Cup were won by Slade Power.

Esoterique springs surprise in Prix Rothschild

Esoterique rebounded from a ninth-place finish in the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot in June to score an upset win in Sunday’s $402,600 Prix Rothschild for fillies and mares over a mile on turf at Deauville, France.

The Group 1 Prix Rothschild featured only four runners, including Integral, who won the Duke of Cambridge and the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, England, in June.

Sultanina scores for Gosden in Nassau Stakes

Sultanina ran down Narniyn to win the Group 1 Nassau Stakes on Saturday at Goodwood, and no surprise: John Gosden trains her.

Gosden won the Nassau for the third year in a row, Sultanina’s victory following wins by Winsili and The Fugue. And Gosden also won his third Group 1 in a week, the Nassau coming on the heels of Taghrooda’s score in the King George last Saturday at Ascot and Kingman’s win in the Sussex on Wednesday at Goodwood.

Integral faces stiff competition in Prix Rothschild

Integral will face only three rivals when she attempts to win her third consecutive major stakes of the summer in Sunday’s $402,600 Prix Rothschild for fillies and mares over a mile on turf in Deauville, France.

Trained by Michael Stoute, Integral won the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket in July. Both of those races were over a mile.

Owned by Cheveley Park Stud, Integral, a 4-year-old filly by Dalakhani, has won 5 of 8 starts. The Group 1 Prix Rothschild will be her first start outside of England.

Nassau Stakes at Goodwood appears wide open

There are seven older fillies and mares entered in the Nassau Stakes on Saturday, closing day of the Glorious Goodwood meet in England, and whichever one comes out on top will be winning for the first time at the Group 1 level. That says a lot about this year’s edition of the Nassau.

Kingman beats Toronado in Sussex Stakes

Having already established himself as the best 3-year-old miler in Europe, Kingman staked his claim Wednesday to being the best European miler, period, defeating high-class 4-year-old Toronado by one length at Goodwood in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes.

The Juddmonte Farms homebred had only three rivals in the Sussex, which was run at a crawl, with Darwin leading on the inside, Toronado glued to his flank, and Outstrip and Kingman taking up positions behind.
