Duramente continues dominance with Japanese Derby triumph

Duramente continued his domination of Japan’s 3-year-old division with his second classic win of the year in Sunday’s $3,351,865 Japanese Derby at Tokyo Racecourse.

The victory stirred discussions about a potential trip to the $5.4 million Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris on Oct. 4. Duramente is listed at 12-1 with British bookmakers for the Arc. Treve, the winner of the Arc in 2013 and 2014, is the 7-2 favorite over 8-1 New Bay, who won Sunday’s French Derby.

New Bay powers home to victory in French Derby

New Bay, making just his fourth career start and winning for only the second time, powered down the center of the Chantilly homestretch Sunday and won the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) by 1 1/2 lengths over Highland Reel.

The Juddmonte Farms homebred by Dubawi, out of Cinnamon Bay, provided trainer Andre Fabre his fourth win in the race, while Vincent Cheminaud, a champion jumps rider in France, easily took home the biggest prize of his flat-racing career.

Treve, the two-time winner of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, makes her 2015 debut on Friday at Saint-Cloud in the Group 2 Prix Corrida.

The 5-year-old mare scored a smashing victory in the 2013 Arc, and after a slow start to her 4-year-old season, she bounced back into form and won her second Arc last fall. Shortly afterward, owner Sheikh Joaan al Thani’s Al Shaqab Racing made the surprising announcement that Treve would remain in training for a 2015 campaign.

Mikki Queen wins second straight in Japanese Oaks

Mikki Queen, who was excluded from the $1,553,842 Japanese 1000 Guineas at Hanshin Racecourse on April 12 because of a lack of earnings, won the $1,667,457 Japanese Oaks at Tokyo Racecourse on Sunday for her second consecutive win.

Ridden by Suguru Hamanaka, Mikki Queen, the 5-1 third choice in a field of 17, closed from off the pace to win the Grade 1 Japanese Oaks by three-quarters of a length over Rouge Buck, the 8-5 favorite. Culminar, who was second in the Japanese 1000 Guineas, finished third.

Let’s Go Donki, who won the 1000 Guineas, finished 10th.

Solow makes short work of winning Prix d'Ispahan

Racing under entirely different conditions, the emergent 5-year-old gelding Solow did the same thing Sunday at Longchamp he had in March at Meydan, galloping to an impressive Group 1 victory.

Facing just three foes and with primary rival Cirrus des Aigles failing to run to form, Solow made short work of the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan. Racing third under Maxime Guyon coming for home, he attacked the pace-setting Gaillo Chop with a little more than a furlong to run, overwhelmed the pacesetter with powerful acceleration, and was geared down to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

Ordak Dan, who won the Group 1 Gran Premio 25 de Mayo in Argentina in 2013 but missed 18 months because of injury before returning to action in late 2014, is part of a field of 15 in Monday’s Gran Premio 25 de Mayo at San Isidro, Argentina.

The winner of the turf race at 1 1/2 miles will receive a fees-paid automatic berth for the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland on Oct. 31, provided the winner is nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program.
