Highland Reel looks for Hong Kong Vase repeat

Debra Roma
Seamus Heffernan wins his first Breeders' Cup race aboard Highland Reel in the Turf.

HONG KONG – Where has Highland Reel traveled? Africa? No. South America? No. Antarctica? No.

All other continents? Yes.

And it is not like Highland Reel merely shows up. The hickory 4-year-old has run top races all over the world, and on Sunday at Sha Tin Racecourse, he’ll try to win the Group 1, $2.1 million Hong Kong Vase for the second year in a row.

Maurice can end career on high note in Hong Kong Cup

Hong Kong Jockey Club
Ryan Moore, who won the Hong Kong Mile aboard Maurice, won the Longines World's Best Jockey award for the second time in three years.

HONG KONG – The best races have brought out the best performances from Japanese star Maurice. If Maurice has saved anything close to his best for last, he will go out a winner Sunday at Sha Tin Racecourse in the Group 1, $3.2 million Hong Kong Cup.

The 5-year-old Maurice, who goes to stud following the Hong Kong Cup, generally has been excellent, scoring 10 wins from 17 starts. He has particularly excelled in Group 1 races, winning five of six. His loss, a second-place finish, came in May when Logotype led on a muddling pace in the Yasuda Kinen.

Able Friend will have crowd's heart, if not bets

Hong Kong Jockey Club
Satono Aladdin worked sharply Wednesday ahead of the Hong Kong Mile.

HONG KONG – If you enjoy rooting home the best story in a big race, Able Friend is your horse in the Hong Kong Mile.

The charismatic 7-year-old, whose massive frame is unmistakable when swinging into action late in a race, will seek his second Hong Kong Mile victory Sunday at Sha Tin after coming back from injuries that cost him most of 2016.

Players who like cashing bets, however, may wish to look elsewhere.

Able Friend is the most recognizable name in the Mile; his rivals have not reached his heights.

A Shin Hikari meets Maurice in defense of Hong Kong Cup title

Hong Kong Jockey Club
A Shin Hikari returns to Sha Tin to defend his 2015 Hong Kong Cup win.

HONG KONG – A Shin Hikari can act goofy at times. Many other times, he acts like one of the best racehorses in the world, and on Sunday at Sha Tin Racecourse, he will attempt to become just the second horse to win consecutive editions of the $3.2 million Hong Kong Cup.
