Hong Kong: Moreira rides eight winners on Sha Tin program

Jockey Joao Moreira won eight races on Sunday’s 11-race program at Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong, a record for a single program in Hong Kong. Moreira had 10 mounts on the program.

The previous mark of six wins on a single program in Hong Kong was shared by Brett Prebble, Douglas Whyte, and Moreira.

“I really don’t have words to describe it,” Moreira told Hong Kong publicity. “It’s amazing. I didn’t expect it to happen, to be honest. To ride eight winners in a day here in Hong Kong is more than special.”

Long River scores upset in al Maktoum Challenge Round 3

Andrew Watkins/Dubai Racing Club
Long River, ridden by Mickael Barzalona, wins Round 3 of the Group 1 al Maktoum Challenge.

It had been a long, long time since Long River won a race, but the 7-year-old American expatriate, perhaps with an assist from a speed-favoring racing surface, finally broke through Saturday at Meydan in the Group 1, $400,000 al Maktoum Challenge Round 3.

No threats to Arrogate in World Cup prep

Andrew Watkins/Dubai Racing Club
Postponed, winner of the 2016 Sheema Classic, will make his 2017 debut in the Dubai City of Gold.

Arrogate might be taking a spin around the Santa Anita track or a nap in his stall Saturday morning when Round 3 of the Al Maktoum Challenge is contested at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai.

The Group 1, $400,000 dirt race at about 1 1/4 miles is the final local prep for the $10 million Dubai World Cup on March 25, but it is highly unlikely that anything that happens in the Super Saturday feature will turn a hair on the World Cup favorite waiting across the world in California.

Gun Runner, Keen Ice could join Arrogate in Dubai World Cup

Coady Photography
Gun Runner enters the stretch in command in the Razorback Monday at Oaklawn, where he earned a career-high 110 Beyer Speed Figure.

The American contingent for the Dubai World Cup card on March 25 at Meydan Racecourse is beginning to take firmer shape, and World Cup favorite Arrogate could have a strong supporting cast joining him in Dubai.
