There’s a Kentucky Derby prep race Sunday – on the other side of the world.
The Hyacinth Stakes, over about one mile on dirt at Tokyo Racecourse in Japan, is the second of two races in the so-called Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby. The two-race sequence was introduced for this year by Churchill Downs to allow a Japan-based horse to qualify for the Kentucky Derby field, which is capped at 20 runners.

The improving 3-year-old Sea Jade won his fifth start of the Hong Kong season on Thursday night at Happy Valley, dead-heating for the victory in the Happy Valley Trophy Handicap.
Sea Jade took the lead in upper stretch of the Happy Valley Trophy Handicap and held it to the very last jump, when a final surge from Blocker Dee produced a dead heat. The winning pair had a half-length on Lucky Year and Archippus in the 1,200-meter Class 1 handicap.
The card Thursday at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai is the strongest so far this World Cup Carnival, with four group stakes on the seven-race program.
There are two Group 2 races on turf, the $200,000 Balanchine over about nine furlongs for fillies and mares, and the $200,000 Zabeel Mile. The Group 3, $200,000 Dubai Millennium is carded for about 1 1/4 miles on turf, and the Group 3, $175,000 Meydan Sprint is a straight-course turf race over about five furlongs.

Lucky Ever performed far differently when he returned from a layoff in Hong Kong in November than his early 2016 form.
Lucky Ever was 11th and 12th in races in November and December before jockey Alexis Badel took the mount for the first time last month. The change in riders resulted in a victory for Lucky Ever at 34-1 in a minor handicap.
