Australia: Le Romain avoids facing Winx in Doncaster Mile

Le Romain is safe in Saturday’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile at Royal Randwick racecourse in Australia.

Winx, Australia’s top-rated horse, is not part of the field for the $2.29 million Doncaster Mile, which is billed as the world’s richest one-mile handicap. Winx is scheduled to run in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on April 8.

In her absence, the Doncaster Mile on turf has a competitive field of 20, led by Le Romain, Palentino, and Happy Clapper.

A gelding who managed one win in his first four starts, Gingernuts has won four consecutive races, a streak that will make him the favorite in Saturday’s Group 1 Australian Derby at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

Hong Kong: Trump finds good spot in East Point Handicap

Trump may be on the verge of a win.

In Wednesday’s East Point Handicap at Happy Valley Racecourse in Hong Kong, Trump, an 8-year-old gelding, is part of a field of 12 in a six-furlong turf race. An Australian-bred, Trump was second in a lower-class race at Happy Valley on March 8 for horses with handicap ratings ranging from 40 to 60.

The East Point Handicap is for horses rated 60 to 80. Trump has a handicap rating of 62 and has been assigned 119 pounds, 14 pounds less than highweight Peace N Prosperity, who has a rating of 76.

Japan: Seiun Kosei scores in Takamatsunomiya Kinen

Seiun Kosei won the first graded stakes of his career, and sixth race overall, in Sunday’s Grade 1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen at six furlongs on turf at Chuyko Racecourse in Japan.

The $1.733 million race was the first Grade 1 turf race of the year in Japan.

Seiun Kosei (7-1) closed from fourth with a wide rally to win by 1 1/4 lengths over Let’s Go Donki in the field of 18. Let’s Go Donki, the winner of the Japanese 1000 Guineas in 2015, was the 4-1 second choice and finished a neck in front of Red Falx, the 5-2 favorite who won the Grade 1 Sprinters’ Stakes last fall.
