Winx dominant in Turnbull Stakes, gets 21st straight win

Now, this was more like it.

Winx stretched her winning streak to 21 races in Saturday’s Group 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia, scoring easily by 6 1/2 lengths.

Unlike her three previous wins, Winx was in control of the Turnbull Stakes in the final quarter-mile. In more recent races, all Group 1 or Group 2 stakes, Winx trailed in the final quarter-mile, and occasionally looked beaten, before salvaging a victory.

Racing Supernova will carry high weight in Yeung UK Handicap

A full field of 14 contests the last-race feature on the Sunday card at Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong.

The $238,282 Yeung UK Handicap is carded for 1400 meters on turf and is difficult to parse. The race is a Class 2 handicap for horses rated 80-100, and the field spans nearly that entire range. Down at the bottom of the ratings, at 81, sit Fifty Fifty and Green Card, while Racing Supernova, is forced to tote 133 pounds in his seasonal debut.

Roly Poly looks to rebound in Sun Chariot

Closing steadily on Bobby Frankel’s record of 25 Grade 1 or Group 1 winners in a year, Aidan O’Brien has a live chance to notch another top-level victory in the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes on Saturday at Newmarket.

O’Brien landed two more Group 1 wins last Sunday at Chantilly, bringing his 2017 total to 22. One of those tallies came in the Prix de l’Opera for fillies and mares, a race in which O’Brien ran one-two with Rhododendron and Hydrangea. O’Brien is so deep in the division that Roly Poly stands a good chance in the Sun Chariot, a one-mile filly-and-mare race.

Can Winx make it 21 straight in Turnbull Stakes?

SDP Media
Winx is listed at 1-10 for Saturday's Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick.

Winx, the reigning Australian Horse of the Year, has compiled a 20-race winning streak since May 2015 with one missing element: She has never run at Flemington Racecourse, the home of the Melbourne Cup.

Winx has raced at Melbourne-area tracks, notably Moonee Valley, having won the Cox Plate in 2015 and last year. All seven of her starts this year have been at Royal Randwick or Rosehill Gardens in the Sydney area.

Dinozzo looks to rebound in Tai Hang Handicap

Dinozzo, the 4-year-old Irish-bred gelding, ended the 2016-17 Hong Kong season with a disappointing performance, finishing a troubled fifth in a handicap at 1 1/4 miles on turf at Sha Tin racecourse in July.

Three months later, and one month into the current Hong Kong season, Dinozzo runs in Thursday’s $238,226 Tai Hang Handicap at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Happy Valley Racecourse. The Tai Hang Handicap is the last of eight races on the program, which begins at 7:15 a.m. Eastern. The Tai Hang Handicap has a post time of 10:50 a.m. Wagering is available at DRFBets.com.

Arc winner Enable to skip Breeders' Cup

Enable, the heroine of the 2017 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, might well race again next year at age 4, but barring a change in plans, she will not be racing again this year.

Enable was a commanding winner of the Arc on Sunday at Chantilly, capping a glorious campaign that included five straight Group 1 victories. Her season’s debut came in April, however, and the Arc appears to have been her 2017 finale.

“I think it would be wrong to run her again this year,” said trainer John Gosden. “To go to the Breeders’ Cup would be too hard on the filly.”

Red Falx notches second straight Sprinters Stakes in Japan

Red Falx won the Grade 1 Sprinters Stakes for the second consecutive year at Hanshin Racecourse in Japan on Sunday, a race that moves the 6-year-old closer to the title of Japan’s top sprinter of the 2017.

Red Falx earned a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at five furlongs on turf at Del Mar on Nov. 4 for Sunday’s win, although there was no immediate confirmation that he would be sent on the trans-Pacific trip.
