Japan: Rey de Oro-Lemaire formidable team in Arima Kinen

Japan Racing Association
Rey de Oro and jockey Christophe Lemaire win the Grade 1 Tenno Sho at Tokyo Racecourse in October.

Rey do Oro has had a career ideally suited to be selected for Sunday’s Grade 1 Arima Kinen Stakes at Nakayama Racecourse.

The field for the $5.16 million Arima Kinen is largely determined by a vote of racing fans, who select 10 of the 16 runners. The remainder of the field is determined by career earnings.

Hong Kong: Perfect Match, Witness Hunter should battle it out in Griffin Trophy

Hong Kong Jockey Club
Perfect Match comes into the Griffin Trophy on Sunday on a two-race win streak.

With a reliance on imported runners, the Hong Kong racing circuit includes horses primarily from Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Most arrive with established form. For the unraced runners, there is a class of races known as Griffin races that allow them to begin their careers at Sha Tin and Happy Valley racecourses against similar horses.

Sunday at Sha Tin, the $255,457 Griffin Trophy at seven furlongs on turf serves as a lucrative year-end race for those horses.

Hong Kong Jockey club finds space relief on Chinese mainland

Hong Kong Jockey Club
Conghua Racecourse, a facility northeast of Guangzhou, will house horses while Sha Tin’s stables are renovated.

HONG KONG – Earlzy on the Hong Kong International Races card on Dec. 9 at Sha Tin Racecourse, a first-time Hong Kong starter named Regency Legend stormed to a four-length victory in a Class 3 handicap. A win margin so wide is rare in Hong Kong racing – but not as rare as the path Regency Legend took to Sha Tin.

Regency Legend did most of his preparatory work for his Hong Kong unveiling not in Hong Kong itself, but in China. He’s one of a growing number of horses stabled at the Conghua Racecourse, the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s lavish facility on the Chinese mainland.
