Ten Sovereigns posts first 2019 victory in July Cup

Ten Sovereigns rebounded from a fourth-place finish as the even-money favorite in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot on July 21 to win for the first time this year in Saturday’s Group 1 July Cup against older sprinters at Newmarket Racecourse in England.

Ridden by Ryan Moore, Ten Sovereigns (9-2) led early in the six-furlong race and briefly yielded the advantage to 20-1 Glorious Journey before retaking command in the final furlong.

Ten Sovereigns finished 2 3/4 lengths clear of 3-1 favorite Advertise, who won the Commonwealth Cup.

Advertise to face older horses in Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket

By the time Advertise won the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup for 3-year-old sprinters at Royal Ascot in England on June 21, winning jockey Frankie Dettori was at the center of attention as the leading rider at the famous five-day meeting.

Dettori ended Royal Ascot with seven wins. Advertise was the last of those victories, a day after Dettori rode the first four winners on the program in a valiant effort to sweep the six-race card.

One Master seeks first win of year in Falmouth Stakes

Hong Kong Jockey Club
One Master, shown training at Sha Tin in December, has lost his two starts this year.

One Master, fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs last November and winless in two starts this year, is expected to be a slight favorite in Friday’s Group 1 Falmouth Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile at Newmarket Racecourse in England.

One Master is part of a talented team trained by William Haggas for the Falmouth Stakes. The stable also runs Beshaayir, the winner of the Group 2 Lanwades Stud Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile at The Curragh in Ireland on May 25.
