Deirdre rallies up fence to take Group 1 Nassau at Goodwood

The Japanese mare Deirdre upset the Group 1 Nassau Stakes on Thursday at Goodwood under a sweet rail-skimming ride from Oisin Murphy.

Murphy, hugging the far-side fence through the homestretch, got late-running Deirdre into full stride about three-sixteenths of a mile from the finish of the 1 1/4-mile Nassau and his mount overhauled pacesetting Mehdaayih in the final furlong and was going away as she crossed the line 1 1/4 lengths to the good.

Too Darn Hot stays smokin' in Sussex Mile

After a cold start to his 3-year-old campaign, the mercury is rising in Too Darn Hot, who fired home with an electric burst to win the Group 1 Sussex Stakes on Wednesday at Goodwood Racecourse.

After a cloudy start to his 2019 season, Europe’s champion 2-year-old of 2018 has warmed to the task in recent weeks. He captured the Prix Jean Prat over a straight seven furlongs at Deauville on July 5 and Too Darn Hot radiated class and talent against a stronger group in the one-mile Sussex.

Mediyaah has formidable team on his side for Nassau Stakes

Trainer John Gosden and jockey Frankie Dettori combined to take down the featured race on the first two days of the Glorious Goodwood festival in England this week and have a chance to run that string to three when Mediyaah starts Thursday in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes.

Dettori and Gosden landed the Group 1 Goodwood Cup on Tuesday with Stradivarius and the Group 1 Sussex Stakes on Wednesday with Too Darn Hot, and while Mediyaah isn’t in the same league as those two horses, she might be good enough to win the Nassau, a fillies-and-mares race contested over just less than 1 ¼ miles.

Enable gets it done in King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Enable won her 11th race in a row, but not without a struggle, as Crystal Ocean gave the great mare all she could handle Saturday at Ascot in the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Overcoming a wide draw and a ground-losing trip under Frankie Dettori, Enable got up onto Crystal Ocean’s back with more than a quarter-mile to run in the 1 1/2-mile King George. Enable forged to a half-length lead with about a furlong-and-a-half remaining before Crystal Ocean battled back along the inside, getting nearly onto even terms with Enable before she finished him off.
