Glorious Artist will return to his preferred surface on the infield dirt track at Sha Tin on Wednesday in the $270,862 Cheung Sha Handicap at about a mile and 50 yards. Judging from his recent turf form, Glorious Artist needs a change of scenery.
Trained by Frankie Lor, Glorious Artist has won 4 of 9 starts on the dirt track and 4 of 22 starts in his Hong Kong career. Glorious Artist, a 6-year-old Irish-bred gelding by Zoffany, won a handicap on the dirt track on Dec. 29 in his most recent start on the surface.
Verry Elleegant won Saturday’s Group 1 Tancred Stakes at Rosehill Gardens in Australia with such ease that trainer Chris Waller considers the 5-year-old mare a candidate for two of the country’s top races – the Caulfield Cup and world-famous Melbourne Cup in the autumn.
Ridden by James McDonald, Verry Elleegant, who paid $3.90 in North American pools, won the $894,000 Tancred Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on turf by 4 1/4 lengths over Mustajeer. Verry Elleegant closed from the middle of the field with a wide rally to take a commanding lead in the final furlong.

None of the leading points earners in the Japanese Road to the Derby are entered to contest the series’ final leg, the Fukuryu Stakes on Saturday at Nakayama Racecourse, but the 1,800-meter (about 1 1/8 miles) dirt contest still drew some talented horses.
