Australia: Hamogany back at right distance for handicap at Bathurst

Hamogany has already had a busy August in Australia, finishing third in a seven-furlong race at Forbes Racecourse on Aug. 3 and fifth against a solid field in the Narromine Cup at a mile on Aug. 16.

The distances may not have been to the liking of the 5-year-old Hamogany, who won a handicap at 1 1/4 miles at Canberra in February. At the time, Hamogany was trained by Gwenda Markwell. Earlier this year, Hamogany was transferred to Dean Mirfin, who started the gelding twice earlier this month.

Halfway through his first year of racing in Australia, the British-bred gelding Korcho has become acclimated to the surroundings. He was eighth in his first two starts in May and June before winning consecutive handicaps at Rosehill Gardens in July.

Ward looks for third Prix Morny win with Campanelle

Racenews Photo
Campanelle won the Group 2 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot 20 days after taking a Gulfstream Park maiden race.

Campanelle will be out to give trainer Wesley Ward his third win in the Prix Morny on Sunday at Deauville, but the going could play against the American invader.

Ward won the Morny, a Group 1, six-furlong, straight-course dash for 2-year-olds with No Nay Never in 2013 and with Lady Aurelia in 2016. Campanelle, owned by Stonestreet Stables, doesn’t look as smart a performer as either of those horses, though she comes into Sunday’s race unbeaten in two starts – a Gulfstream maiden win and a three-quarter-length tally in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Love dominant in Yorkshire Oaks; on to Arc as probable favorite

Love knows no bounds. Not this European racing season, at least, and certainly not Wednesday at York Racecourse in England, where Love, with little more than taps from jockey Ryan Moore, won the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks by five lengths.

Australia: Hypersonic drops blinkers, finds softer spot

The competition was too sharp for Hypersonic in a six-furlong handicap Aug. 1 at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Australia.

Hypersonic raced near the lead and faded to finish 10th of 14, beaten 7 1/4 lengths, the first loss in the 4-year-old gelding’s third start.

For his fourth start at Bendigo Racecourse on Friday, Hypersonic faces an easier field and will race without blinkers for the first time. Hypersonic is expected to take his customary position near the front in a handicap at 5 1/2 furlongs, a distance that may be a better fit.

Still strong at 7, Con Te Partiro eyes Winx Stakes upset

Barbara D. Livingston
Con Te Partiro, ridden by John Velazquez, wins the Bolton Landing Stakes by 5 3/4 lengths Wednesday.

Con Te Partiro won stakes for trainer Wesley Ward at Saratoga in 2016 and Royal Ascot in 2017. Her greatest success, though, has been with legendary trainer Gai Waterhouse in Australia this year.

Con Te Partiro won Group 1 races in March and April after returning to racing when she failed to get into foal. The 7-year-old Con Te Partiro is still racing and will have her first start of the new Australian season in Saturday’s Group 1 Winx Stakes at seven furlongs at Royal Randwick.

Australia: Order Again looks to end skid in Rowley Mile

Order Again has gone nearly 15 months without a win in Australia, racing at some of the country’s top tracks in minor stakes or handicaps in recent months.

A journey to a smaller venue – Hawkesbury Racecourse on the outskirts of Sydney – on Thursday for the $108,600 Rowley Mile could provide an elusive win.

Order Again was sent to trainer Chris Waller after a ninth-place finish by 3 1/4 lengths in a handicap at Sunshine Coast Racecourse in late April. For Waller, Order Again is winless in five starts, finishing second, third, or fourth in each race.

Love has little to fear in Yorkshire Oaks

Love could be a filly good enough to conquer all. On her way to a date in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe this fall, she races for the first time in nearly two months Thursday in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks.

Love was a strong odds-on favorite Monday with British bookmakers before the composition of the Yorkshire Oaks was finalized Tuesday. One horse she won’t face is Enable, with trainer John Gosden waiting for a different time, a different place, to send his 5-year-old mare into a battle with Love.
