Dubai World Cup: Life Is Good could give Pletcher a rare first

Barbara D. Livingston
Life Is Good will be a hot favorite in the Dubai World Cup off this victory in the Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 29.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – He was the California-based 2021 Kentucky Derby favorite until he got hurt in late March. His trainer wound up winning the Derby anyway, only to have his Derby winner test positive for a medication banned on race day, which drew harsh sanctions not only in Kentucky but in New York.

Romantic Warrior edges California Spangle in Hong Kong Derby

Romantic Warrior wore down a dead-game California Spangle to win a stirring renewal of the $3.1 million Hong Kong Derby on Sunday at Sha Tin Racecourse.

The result mirrored the Hong Kong Classic Mile, first in the 4-year-old classic series in which Romantic Warrior got up by a half-length over pacesetting California Spangle. California Spangle went wire to wire in the 1,800-meter Hong Kong Classic Cup, in which Romantic Warrior was undone by a terrible trip and finished fourth. These two geldings now have proven they’re the top 4-year-olds racing in Hong Kong.

Australia: Sovereign Gold seeks to notch consecutive wins for first time

Sovereign Gold is a 4-year-old Australian filly who has won twice in her four-race career - in a maiden race in her debut last April and in her return from a layoff of nine months in February.

Tuesday at Geelong Racecourse, on the outskirts of Melbourne, Sovereign Gold has an excellent chance for a third win in a handicap at 5 1/2 furlongs, provided she can produce consecutive wins for the first time in her career.

Hong Kong: Purton cold-waters California Spangle's chances in Derby

Hong Kong Jockey Club
California Spangle won his third straight in the Class 2 Chak On Handicap at Sha Tin.

The Hong Kong Derby comes Sunday at Sha Tin Racecourse, and as the final leg of the 4-year-old classic series arrives, a key question arises: Is Purton playing possum?

Australia: Criminal Code tries to break dry spell in Yarra Valley Cup

For a strong favorite, the Australian gelding Criminal Code has something to prove in Sunday’s Yarra Valley Cup at about 1 1/4 miles at Yarra Valley Racecourse.

Criminal Code is winless in 10 starts since a one-mile handicap at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney last July. During the losing streak, Criminal Code has been second or third in two stakes, including a third in the Mornington Cup Prelude at 1 1/4 miles at Caulfield on Feb. 26 in his latest start.

Stablemates A Plus Tard, Minella Indo run one-two in Cheltenham Gold Cup

The order of appearance changed, but there were familiar names among the successful horses, jockeys and trainer involved with the first two finishers of Friday’s Grade 1 Cheltenham Gold Cup at Cheltenham Racecourse in England.

A Plus Tard ran past stablemate Minella Indo after the final fence to win by 15 lengths. Last year, Minella Indo and A Plus Tard were first and second, separated by 1 1/4 lengths. Both are trained by Henry de Bromhead of Ireland.

Australia: Zaaki favored to win lucrative All-Star Mile at Flemington

The 2021 season was Zaaki’s introduction to racing in Australia.

After losses in his first two starts, Zaaki won six of his next seven races, including three Group 1 wins.

No wonder the former British-trained gelding is an early 5-2 favorite to win Saturday’s $3.69 million All-Star Mile at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. The field is partially determined by a vote of fans.
