Australia: Designs could move forward off prep in Kyneton Cup

With the benefit of a mid-October prep race, the 5-year-old mare Designs appears well positioned to win for the third time in her last five starts in the Kyneton Cup at Bendigo Racecourse in Australia on Tuesday evening across American time zones.

A winner of 4 of 20 starts, Designs won consecutive handicaps at 1 9/16 miles at Cranbourne in mid-March and Morphettville in early April before finishing second by 4 1/2 lengths as the 7-5 favorite in the Port Adelaide Cup at the same distance on May 7.

Japan: Equinox's incredible rally catches Panthalassa in Tenno Sho

Equinox has grown up nicely in Japan in recent months.

After finishing second in two Grade 1 races in the spring – the Japanese 2000 Guineas and the Japanese Derby – Equinox won his debut against older horses in a bizarre running of Sunday’s Grade 1 autumn Tenno Sho at Tokyo Racecourse.

Ridden by Christophe Lemaire, Equinox ($5.20) closed from 10th in a field of 15 to win by a length over 21-1 Panthalassa, who led by as many as 15 lengths after the first mile in the $2.6 million race at 1 1/4 miles.

Australia: Deauville Legend heavy favorite in Melbourne Cup

The Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes for 3-year-olds at York Racecourse in England each August has historically been a prep for the Group 1 English St. Leger in September at nearby Doncaster Racecourse.

This year’s winner, Deauville Legend, has been sent to the other side of the world, instead of across Yorkshire.

Deauville Legend is a heavy favorite at 5-2 to win the Group 1 Melbourne Cup at two miles at Flemington Racecourse in Australia. The race has a post time of midnight Eastern on Tuesday, or 9 p.m. Pacific on Monday.

Cairo, Aesop's Fables drop out of Breeders' Cup races

Bill Denver/Equi-Photo
Webslinger, who won the Nownownow Stakes at Monmouth on Sept. 17, will join the BC Juvenile Turf field in place of Cairo.

LEXINTON, Ky. - The Breeders’ Cup overseas contingent, which saw three defections among pre-entered horses earlier in the week, lost two more runners late this week. Neither Cairo, selected into the Juvenile Turf field, nor Aesop’s Fables, who was in the Juvenile Turf Sprint, are shipping for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

The three horses taken off the overseas shipping lists earlier were Saffron Beach for the Filly and Mare Turf, Bayside Boy for the Mile, and Never Ending Story for the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Australia: Two go from longshots to favorites in Goulburn Cup

As longshots, Cotehele and Riodini were not beaten far in races at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Australia on Oct. 15.

The respectable losses have put them among the leading hopes in the $128,100 Goulburn Cup at seven furlongs at Goulburn Racecourse on Saturday.

Cotehele was sixth by slightly more than three lengths at 25-1 in the $620,000 Silver Eagle Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs for 4-year-olds on Oct. 15.
