Australia: Amelia's Jewel faces stiff test in Northerly Stakes

The 3-year-old filly Amelia’s Jewel has run only in stakes in her brief career.

She has won at distances ranging from five furlongs to a mile, with all the starts at Ascot Racecourse in Perth. She starts in the most important race of her career to date – the $1.02 million Northerly Stakes on Friday at Ascot, her first start in a Group 1 and in a seven-figure race.

Australia: Camaguey big fish in small pond in Mudgee Cup

Camaguey, who starts in the Mudgee Cup in Australia on Thursday, is far from a high-profile member of the powerful Godolphin Racing stable.

Trained by James Cummings, Camaguey has won 2 of 12 starts, racing in everyday handicaps at prominent tracks. The Mudgee Cup, run at a mile at Mudgee Racecourse, will be held at one of Australia’s smaller venues, but provides the 4-year-old Camaguey with an excellent chance to add to his win total.

Australia: Dark Euro's versatility gives him slight edge

Dark Euro was the 80-1 outsider in a field of nine when he nearly pulled a massive upset at Grafton Racecourse in Australia on Nov. 18, closing from seventh to miss by a nose.

The narrow loss will have the attention of bettors when Dark Euro starts in a seven-furlong handicap at Coffs Harbour Racecourse on Wednesday evening across American time zones.

Dark Euro, a winner of 5 of 35 starts, was the 5-2 co-favorite in early betting as of Tuesday along with Rose Bouquet.

Australia: Lightly raced fillies might have edge at Gosford

The careers of the fillies Lucky Variety and My Eloise are on similar paths in advance of their first meeting, which comes in a six-furlong handicap at Gosford Racecourse on Tuesday.

Both returned from a brief layoff to win maiden races a day apart earlier this month, and both have potential for improvement.

Australia: Barellan Bandit could threaten Juventus in one-mile handicap

The Australian gelding Barellan Bandit has such a solid race record at tiny Tamworth Racecourse that the 6-year-old is a suitable alternative to the solid favorite Juventus in a one-mile handicap at that venue on Monday evening across American time zones.

Barellan Bandit has won 5 of 21 starts in his career, and 2 of 3 races at Tamworth. In his last start at Tamworth, Barellan Bandit won a seven-furlong handicap in July, closing from seventh to win by slightly less than 1 3/4 lengths.

Japan: Vela Azul gets up in final strides of Japan Cup

The Grade 1 Japan Cup at Tokyo Racecourse on Sunday looked like a lost cause for Vela Azul early in the long stretch.

That is until jockey Ryan Moore weaved his way past a majority of the field to take the lead in the final strides of Japan’s leading race.

Sent off favored in North American pools, Vela Azul ($8.50) finished three-quarters of a length in front of 7-2 Shahryar, who was third in the 2021 Japan Cup.

Weltreisende (9-1) finished third in Sunday’s race, beaten a length, in a field of 18.

Australia: Parties Galore primed for breakout in Sunday handicap

Parties Galore had 10 races' experience before she won for the first time in a maiden race at Port Macquarie in Australia in August.

The win has boosted her career.

Since then, Parties Galore has finished in the top three in three starts, and beat winners for the first time in a six-furlong handicap on the Beaumont course at Newcastle on Oct. 24.
