Australia: Murwillumbah Cup an important race for Battleton

Chances are dwindling for the Australian gelding Battleton to gain a berth in the $1.9 million Big Dance Stakes at a mile at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney on Nov. 7.

Horses gain consideration for berths in the Big Dance Stakes with top two finishes in a series of qualifying races in the preceding year. Battleton was a troubled fifth in the Coffs Harbour Cup at a mile at Coffs Harbour Racecourse on Aug. 4, one of the qualifying races, but has another chance to gain a berth in the Murwillumbah Cup at 7 3/4 furlongs at Murwillumbah Racecourse on Thursday evening.

Australia: Don't overthink it, Socrates can end losing streak at Gosford

No deep thoughts are required to determine that Socrates, the 6-year-old New Zealand-bred gelding, is overdue for his fifth career win in Australia.

Beaten a head in a one-mile handicap at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Aug. 12, Socrates can end an 11-race losing streak since September in a one-mile handicap at Gosford Racecourse on Wednesday evening if he can avoid a speed duel.

Paddington faces just three in International Stakes in bid for eighth straight

Goodwood Racecourse
Paddington comes into the International off this victory in the Sussex Mile at Goodwood.

The fabulous 3-year-old Paddington will have but three rivals when he tries for his eighth straight win Wednesday in the Group 1 International Stakes at York Racecourse.

An injury to star-crossed 2022 Derby winner Desert Crown this past weekend and the withdrawal Monday of several other early entrants for the about 1 5/16-mile fixture left only Mostahdaf, the filly Nashwa, and longshot The Foxes to face Paddington.

Sodden ground puts Prix Morny up for grabs

Julie Wright
Above the Curve looks best suited to handle the ground in the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet.

The Group 1 Prix Morny came up a hot race this year, but it’s an open question how any of its top entrants will cope with testing ground Sunday at Deauville Racecourse.

The course as of Friday was rated heavy, and thunderstorms Friday night were forecast to give way to light rain early Saturday morning. The ground should dry somewhat before the Sunday card, but it will be nothing like the going that stakes winners in England earlier this summer encountered.

Australia: Two Big Fari a deserving favorite despite losing streak and weight

Never mind the 22-race losing streak since 2020 or his status as the topweight at 138.8 pounds, Two Big Fari is a deserving favorite in the minor Narromine Cup at tiny Narromine Racecourse in Australia on Saturday evening.

An 8-year-old gelding, Two Big Fari has won 7 of 34 starts in his career and has kept good company in recent starts, with frequent appearances at the tougher tracks in the Sydney metropolitan area.
