Australia: Gold Trip unconfirmed for Caulfield Cup over turf concerns

The Group 1 Caulfield Cup at Caulfield Racecourse may lose its pre-race favorite in Gold Trip if conditions are too firm for the $3.16 million race.

Gold Trip was the winner of the Group 1 Melbourne Cup last November, and is scheduled to start in the same race on Nov. 7. The Caulfield Cup could be his final prep for the Melbourne Cup at two miles.

On soft ground, Horizon Dore rises up in Champion Stakes

Megan Ridgwell
Mostahdaf would have been favored in the Champion if the race were run on dry ground, but his participation is unlikely with conditions expected to be very soft to heavy.

Horizon Dore, a French 3-year-old who never has raced at the Group 1 level, on Thursday was the antepost favorite for Saturday’s Group 1, $1.2 million Champion Stakes at Ascot.

Soft course won't bother Paddington in Queen Elizabeth II

Goodwood Racecourse
Paddington had no trouble with very soft to heavy footing in this win in the Sussex.

One reason the Breeders’ Cup has made Southern California the anchor of its late-season racing festival is weather. Warm air, fast dirt, firm turf – proper conditions for top-class racing. You won’t find Southern California weather in England during mid-October, and conditions for Champions Day, England’s late-season racing festival Saturday at Ascot, will be messy.

Rain already had turned the course soft Thursday and with Storm Babet bringing more intense rainfall Friday into Saturday, soft could become heavy.

Australia: Dreamdeel gets ideal distance

Dreamdeel has won two of three career starts at a mile in Australia and a return to that distance for the first time since August in the minor Krambach Cup at Taree Racecourse on Thursday evening may end a three-race losing streak at longer distances.

A winner of 4 of 21 starts, Dreamdeel is part of a field of nine in the Krambach Cup and was the co-favorite at 5-2 with Scorched Land in early betting as of Wednesday.

Australia: Cholante faces easier task at Hawkesbury

Scratched from a race against males earlier this week, Cholante will start favored in a handicap at 5 1/2 furlongs for fillies and mares at Hawkesbury Racecourse in Australia on Wednesday evening.

Cholante, a winner of 2 of 7 starts, will carry topweight of 135.5 pounds against eight opponents and starts from the inside post. The draw may not make a significant difference for Cholante since the 4-year-old filly runs from off the pace.
