Magna, Bally in slots deal

Bally Technologies Inc., the gambling and entertainment conglomerate, has signed a contract with Magna Entertainment Corp. to manage the slot-machine casino scheduled to open at the Magna-owned Gulfstream Park this fall.

The agreement calls for Bally to supervise the casino's revenue accounting, create a bonus program for players, and provide a wide variety of gaming machines at Gulfstream. The track is expected to open its slots complex with 500 machines in October.

Denman to call Breeders' Cup

Trevor Denman, the longtime Southern California race caller, has been hired by ESPN to call the races for its 2006 Breeders' Cup telecast, the network announced Wednesday.

Denman, who calls the races at Del Mar and Santa Anita, will call the Breeders' Cup races on a national broadcast for the first time. The Breeders' Cup will be held this year on Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs.

Four bids and many miles to go in N.Y. franchise race

Four groups - Capital Play Ltd., Empire Racing Associates, Excelsior Racing, and the New York Racing Association - submitted bids by a Tuesday afternoon deadline in pursuit of the franchise to operate New York's three most popular Thoroughbred racetracks, beginning in 2008.

The bids were submitted to the Ad Hoc Committee on the Future of Racing, a state panel that is overseeing the process and that issued a request for proposals in June.

Ohio approves test for EPO

The Ohio State Racing Commission has approved a plan to test for the illegal blood-enhancing drug erythropoietin and will send postrace blood samples to a laboratory in Pennsylvania that has developed a new test to detect the drug.

The approval came at a commission meeting last week. Erythropoietin, commonly referred to as EPO, can help horses increase the oxygen-carrying capacity of red blood cells.
