Michael McMahon, a partner in McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, was elected president of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders at a meeting of the group's board of directors. Other officers for 2007 are Suzie O'Cain of Highcliff Farm in Delanson, N.Y., who was elected vice president, and Chris Purdy of Ivy League Farm, secretary/treasurer.

Horsemen sue over Ohio ruling

The Ohio Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association has filed a lawsuit in United States District Court for Southern Ohio that challenges a recent decision by the Ohio State Racing Commission to overrule the horsemen's group's veto of a simulcast signal.

Barretts sale ends with gains

The two-day Barretts January mixed auction ended Tuesday on a positive note, with gains across the board at the final session and for the entire sale.

Both sessions sold a combined 438 horses for $4,180,400, up 17 percent from last year's auction. Last year, 441 horses brought $3,481,300. The average and median prices also increased this year, by 21 percent and 29 percent, respectively, to reach $9,544 and $4,500.

Barretts day up all around

Fueled by a record session-topper, the Barretts January mixed auction's opening day rang up increases across the board on Monday in Pomona, Calif.

The first of two sessions sold 223 horses for gross receipts of $2,562,600, an increase of 6 percent from last year's equivalent session. The average price climbed 14 percent, from $10,053 to $11,491, and the median price rose 25 percent, from $4,000 to $5,000.

Gulfstream signal back at New York OTB's

The signal from Gulfstream Park in Florida was restored on Wednesday afternoon to the branches of all six New York State offtrack betting companies after officials of the OTB's and Florida horsemen reached an agreement on a simulcasting contract, according to officials for the both sides.

Gross up at Keeneland but average, median down

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Keeneland January all-ages auction ended Monday with mixed results, posting a record gross but decreases in average and median prices.

The eight-day auction began with a record catalog of 2,933 horses, and it ended with a record gross of $72,329,100, less than 1 percent higher than the previous record gross set last year. But the average price of $39,134 was down 12 percent from last season, and the median price fell 6 percent to $15,000.

Downthedustyroad sells for $1.5 million

LEXINGTON, Ky. - One of Ahmed Zayat's young racemares stole the show at Keeneland again on Thursday when Grade 1 winner Downthedustyroad brought $1.5 million from Fleetwood Bloodstock.

The session-topping price was unusual this late in the eight-day Keeneland January all-ages sale, which by its fourth session had settled into a far lower average price bracket.

Northern California quarantine lifted

The quarantine of Golden Gate Fields, Bay Meadows, and Pleasanton in northern California was lifted Wednesday, according to a release from the California Horse Racing Board. The quarantine had been in place since a horse tested positive at Golden Gate for equine herpes on Dec. 29, 2006.

California moves forward on stricter drug penalties

The medication committee of the California Horse Racing Board on Tuesday recommended that California adopt stricter penalties for drug infractions, enforce a 28-day withdrawal period for the popular bronchodilator clenbuterol, and begin to draft rules banning the use of anabolic steroids.
