World record-setter's reserve not met

One Hot Wish, who set a world record of 48.87 seconds for 4 1/2 furlongs in a wire-to-wire victory last Thursday at Keeneland, failed to reach her reserve Tuesday on a final bid of $300,000 at Keeneland's 2-year-old sale in Lexington, Ky.

A 2-year-old daughter of Bring the Heat and Wish for a Jeanne (by Roar), One Hot Wish returned to owners Robert Tanklage and Wesley Ward. One Hot Wish, offered as Hip No. 227, was nominated to the sale late after her world-record performance and sold as the first horse through the ring.

Record-setting filly late add to sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Keeneland April 2-year-old sale got a flashy addition Friday, when owners Robert C. Tanklage and Wesley Ward decided to put their world-record-setting filly One Hot Wish in the Tuesday auction.

One Hot Wish, a daughter of Bring the Heat trained by Ward, won her career debut Thursday at Keeneland by 12 1/4 lengths, setting a 4 1/2-furlong world mark of 48.87 seconds. Now she will head for the auction block as part of the Eaton Sales Agency's consignment.

Excelsior stresses plan's casino aspect

ALBANY, N.Y. - Horse racing is a failed sport, the casino operator Steve Wynn told a panel evaluating bidders for the franchise held by the New York Racing Association on Wednesday, and the only way to make it popular again is to introduce people to the sport with the attraction of slot machines and other entertainment.

Illinois court rules against tracks

A judge in suburban Chicago has ruled in favor of four Illinois riverboat casinos in a lawsuit seeking to overturn a bill that would have directed a percentage of casino revenue to the state's racetracks.

The state of Illinois could choose to appeal the ruling, made by a judge in Will County last week, to the Illinois Supreme Court. But for now, the decision, which was announced Thursday, is another defeat for Illinois racing.

Racing advised to get with the times

TUCSON, Ariz. – Two experts in their fields who know horse racing and have enjoyed it for years, but are the harshest critics of its business model practices, told 200 racing executives at the recent joint meeting of the Thoroughbred Racing Associations and Harness Tracks of America that the industry still is trying to sell buggy whips in the age of computers and the Internet.

Bill Shanklin is a professor at the University of Akron’s College of Business in Ohio. He has written penetrating articles on racing for years, for a number of trade publications of all breeds.

Excelsior: Swindal still part of team

Excelsior Racing Associates plans to continue bidding on the franchise held by the New York Racing Association with Steve Swindal as part of the operation, the group said in a statement released on Thursday morning.

Excelsior released the statement in the midst of speculation about the future of Swindal, a part-owner of the New York Yankees, after his wife, a daughter of the Yankees' managing partner, George Steinbrenner, filed for divorce.

After six-year wait, state gets first OTB

The first offtrack betting facility in New Jersey will have its official ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday night in Vineland amid a blaze of pomp and ceremony, with local politicians and racing officials in attendance. The opening comes almost six years after Acting Gov. Donald T. DeFrancesco signed the enabling legislation in the summer of 2001.

The facility, called Favorites in Vineland, will open to the public on Friday. It is owned by Greenwood Racing, whose holdings include Philadelphia Park, Atlantic City Race Course, and a network of Pennsylvania OTBs.

Aptitude colt early OBS leader

Hip No. 6, a $250,000 Aptitude-L'Abidjanaise colt offered by Nick De Meric, agent, led selling early at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March select 2-year-old sale in Ocala, Fla. Fred Papert was the buyer. The Kentucky-bred colt is from the family of Grade 2 winner Vision and Verse. The sale runs through Wednesday.

Kostas named general manager of DRF

Daily Racing Form has named Jim Kostas as senior vice president and general manager. Kostas will be responsible for the day-to-day business of all DRF horse-racing products.

"Jim has been instrumental in the organic growth of our business as well as the seamless integration of our recently acquired properties," said Brent Diamond, the Racing Form's president and CEO.
