Panel studying synthetic surfaces

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A racing committee overseen by the Jockey Club has begun collecting data on the maintenance of synthetic racing surfaces in an attempt to offer guidance to tracks on how best to groom and care for them, members of the committee said Thursday.

Magna plan worries industry

For-sale sign up on Magna tracks

Magna Entertainment Corp. will attempt to eliminate more than half a billion dollars in debt by the end of next year by selling racetracks and exploring partnerships for several real-estate projects and other assets, company officials said on Thursday.

Thomas Hodgson, a consultant hired by Magna to evaluate the company's assets, said during a conference call Thursday afternoon that no property owned by Magna was off limits for a possible sale. Hodgson called the plan "ambitious."

Gross receipts, average down at British Columbia sale

Results were down significantly at the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's yearling and mixed sale held in Langley, British Columbia, on Tuesday.

The total of $1,129,150 from 101 horses sold was off by 29 percent compared with last year, when $1,589,350 was the gross from 138 horses sold. The average of $11,180 was also down, 2.9 percent, from $11,517 in 2006.

A total of 97 yearlings grossed $1,111,450, down 28 percent from last year. In 2006, 128 yearlings were sold for a total of $1,556,850.

New York panel to hear three on franchise

Three racing industry officials, including a former New York racing commissioner, Bennett Liebman, are expected to appear on Wednesday before the New York Senate's Committee on Racing, Wagering, and Gaming for a meeting to discuss the New York Racing Association franchise, a spokeswoman for the committee's chairman said on Monday.

Fasig-Tipton sale to offer Grade 1 talent

Fasig-Tipton Kentucky has set its November mixed auction in Lexington for Nov. 4, the company announced Monday.

The sale will include such young Grade 1-winning fillies and mares as Appealing Zophie, Asi Siempre, Cash Included, Cotton Blossom, Dancing Edie, Dream Rush, Ermine, Maryfield, and Round Pond. Also on offer are Grade 1 winners Leave Me Alone, in foal to A. P. Indy, and Indy Five Hundred, in foal to Kingmambo.

Florida court OK's signal exchange

A ruling by the Florida Supreme Court Thursday paves the way for Calder Race Course and Gulfstream Park to take simulcast wagering on each other's live cards as well as on any other signal the live track imports.

The court ruled unconstitutional a 10-year-old state law that limits the simulcasts Thoroughbred tracks can show from other parimutuel facilities within 25 miles.

Meyocks hired by Jockeys' Guild

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Jockeys' Guild has hired a consulting firm headed by former racetrack executives Terry Meyocks and Phil O'Hara to manage the organization, and Meyocks will serve as the guild's new national manager, the Guild and Meyocks said on Thursday.

The management contract with Meyocks & O'Hara Enterprises has a term of two years, according to Meyocks, who will replace the coin dealer and former sports agent Dwight Manley as the guild's national manager. O'Hara, a former executive at Penn National Racecourse and Equibase, will assist Meyocks in a consulting role.
