Weanlings boost N.Y. sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The New York Breeders' Sales Company's fall mixed sale on Saturday in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., grossed $1,776,900 for 172 horses sold. Most of that total, $1,197,700, was accounted for in the one-day sale's select weanling portion of the sale, which averaged $23,485 - well above the overall sale average of $10,330.

The overall auction median was $3,500, and the buyback rate was 20 percent.

Filly brings record $5.3M at Tattersalls

A $5,330,000 Sadler's Wells filly set a world-record price for a yearling filly at auction Friday at the final session of the Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling sale in Newmarket, England.

The price shattered the previous world-record price of $4.4 million for the yearling filly Moon's Whisper when she sold to Shadwell Estate at the 2000 Keeneland September yearling sale in Lexington.

Tattersalls session sees gain

The Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling sale in Newmarket, England, produced across-the-board gains and a million-dollar topper Thursday at its third session when Coolmore's Demi O'Byrne paid $1.6 million for a son of Coolmore stallion Galileo.

O'Byrne bid about $1,606,500 for Hip No. 381, a son of the stakes-winning Silver Hawk mare Silver Colours. The bay colt sold as the property of Stratford Place Stud.

Churchill and TVG drop lawsuit

Churchill Downs Inc. and Television Games Network have agreed to a dismissal of a lawsuit that claimed that TVG was prohibited from assigning the broadcast rights for Churchill's signals to third parties.

The dismissal has little practical effect on either of the two companies. Churchill sued TVG last year after the company assigned the rights to Churchill signals it controlled to At The Races, a British broadcasting company, but no broadcasts from Churchill's tracks were ever shown on At The Races, according to a Churchill spokeswoman, Julie Koenig Loignon.

Plan would cut NYRA's share of slot cash

The New York Senate is considering a proposal by state Sen. William Larkin that would change the breakdown of slot-machine revenue at the Aqueduct casino, awarding the casino operator a larger share and the New York Racing Association less, legislative officials said. Larkin's proposal would alter the terms of a 30-year extension of NYRA's franchise to run the state's three major racetracks that is supported by Gov. Eliot Spitzer and the state's Assembly.

$40K topper at OBS open session

After posting gains and a six-figure topper at its consignor-preferred sessions, the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s fall mixed auction ended its first open day Wednesday in Ocala, Fla., with a $40,000 session topper.

That was the price Marion Montanari paid to acquire the 6-year-old broodmare Amazer from Padua Stables (Janie Roper, agent). The stakes-placed daughter of Quaker Ridge was carrying an Exchange Rate foal. She is a half-sister to another stakes-placed runner, Mighty David.

Betting, purses rise in quarter

Total betting and purses in the United States and Canada rose in the third quarter of 2007 despite a slight decline in the number of racing days, according to figures released by Equibase and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association on Wednesday.

Racing may shut down Jan. 1, NYRA warns

Thoroughbred racing in New York would shut down Jan. 1, 2008 if the state legislature does not approve a deal to award the racing franchise by that time, a top official with the New York Racing Association told members of the state Senate's Racing, Gaming, and Wagering Committee at a hearing Wednesday in Albany.

Charles Hayward, the president of NYRA, said that logistical issues and complications from NYRA's bankruptcy filing late last year would lead to a shutdown. NYRA's franchise to operate Aqueduct, Belmont, and Saratoga expires on Dec. 31.
