Mid-Atlantic tracks discuss teamwork

Racing officials from major tracks in New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey met on Wednesday at Aqueduct in New York to discuss how to coordinate their stakes schedules in the future and the possible creation of a multi-state bet, the officials said.

Dispersal boosts Barretts sale

Led by horses of racing age from a dispersal of Sunland Park owner Stan Fulton, prices soared during Monday's session of the Barretts October mixed sale in Pomona, Calif.

On Monday, 201 horses sold for $2,434,500, an average of $12,112. During the corresponding session in 2006, 190 horses sold for $959,700, an average of $5,051.

The topper during Monday's session was Tenga Cat, a 4-year-old Storm Cat colt purchased for $250,000 by Grant Truman from the Fulton dispersal. The price was a record for a horse of racing age at the October sale, according to Barretts officials.

Penn National net income at $46.6M for quarter

Penn National Gaming Inc., the owner of three racetrack-casinos and several other casino properties, had net income of $46.6 million in the third quarter of 2006, according to financial statements released Thursday.

Revenue in the quarter was $629.5 million, compared with $586.1 million in the third quarter of last year. In the third quarter this year, Penn National had revenue of $20.4omillion from Zia Park, a racetrack and casino in New Mexico that Penn National purchased in a transaction that closed earlier this year.

First step to New York steroid ban

The New York State Racing and Wagering Board has begun asking for comment on a proposed rule to ban all but four anabolic steroids in both Thoroughbred racing and harness racing.

The rule, which is modeled on recommendation by the Association of Racing Commissioners International, would allow four anabolic steroids – stanozolol, boldenone, nandrolone, and testosterone – but would establish threshold levels for the drugs that would prohibit their use within 30 days of a race. All other anabolic steroids would be prohibited.

ClassicStar cases put on hold

A judicial panel has consolidated numerous lawsuits against the former ClassicStar commercial breeding operation and ordered that they be transferred to the Eastern District of Kentucky. But the judge who will take over the cases has ordered a stay because of ClassicStar's Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

ClassicStar filed for bankruptcy on Sept. 14, estimating it owed creditors $69,708,624.

Shakespeare to stand for $20,000

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Hill 'n' Dale Farms in Lexington will stand Grade 1-winning millionaire Shakespeare in 2008 for a $20,000 stud fee.

Shakespeare, a 6-year-old son of Theatrical, came back from a tendon injury to capture the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile in September. But he reinjured the tendon in his left foreleg soon afterward and was retired from racing almost two weeks ago.

$320K colt leads Fasig-Tipton sale

The open yearling market in Kentucky produced several six-figure youngsters Monday at the first session of Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's October yearling sale in Lexington.

A flashy purchase by Hamburg Place owner Preston Madden, who bred 1986 Kentucky Derby winner Alysheba, was the opening-day highlight at 5:30 p.m. Madden bid $320,000 for Hip No. 251, an Empire Maker colt who is the first foal out of Grade 1 winner Nonsuch Bay. Warrendale Sales, agent, consigned the colt.
