Real Quiet on the move

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Champion and 1998 Kentucky Derby winner Real Quiet will relocate within Pennsylvania for the 2008 breeding season, moving from William Solomon's Pin Oak Lane Stud in New Freedom to launch a new operation, Penn Ridge Farm, in Middletown, Pa.

Penn Ridge is owned by Real Quiet's syndicate manager Mike Jester and partner Joe Besecker. Real Quiet will be the first stallion for the 115-acre property. Penn Ridge is home to nearly 50 broodmares owned by Jester and Besecker.

Keeneland has 2,547 in January sale

Keeneland's January all-ages sale will have a catalog of 2,547 horses in 2008, the auction house announced Wednesday.

The sale will take place in Lexington, Ky., from Jan. 7 to 13. The catalog will feature 1,201 broodmares, 862 yearlings, 482 horses of racing age, and two stallions.

The catalog will be available online from the week of Dec. 4, and printed copies will be available the week of Dec. 17.

Numbers soar at Keeneland sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Keeneland's November mixed sale had a second consecutive day of dramatic double-digit gains at Saturday's 13th session, as the two-week auction neared its conclusion.

The Saturday session sold 202 horses for $2,143,900, up 73 percent from the total at last year's equivalent session when 161 horses sold. The 2007 average price of $10,613 was up 38 percent from last season's $7,678, and the $6,850 median was up 37 percent from last year's figure of $5,000.

Lane's End to get War Pass

War Pass, who almost certainly will pick up the juvenile championship after a season in which he was undefeated and won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, will retire to Lane's End in Versailles, Ky., at the end of his racing career.

The Farish family's farm announced it had reached a private deal with War Pass's owner, Robert LaPenta, to stand the Cherokee Run colt. No date has been set for War Pass's retirement, and he is likely to take a tilt at the Triple Crown in 2008 for trainer Nick Zito.

Maryland slots plan advances

The Maryland house of delegates narrowly approved a plan Friday to let voters decide next year whether slot machines should be legalized in the state.

The house passed a version of Gov. Martin O'Malley's slots referendum bill by a 86-52 vote. The bill, already passed by the senate, needed a three-fifths majority.

Multiple forces spur influx of foreign buyers

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Keeneland's sale grounds have been filled with foreign shoppers in November, thanks to a weak American dollar, strong foreign racing economies, and marketing by Kentucky breeders and sales companies.

Buyers from more than 40 nations - including France, England, Russia, the Ukraine, the Philippines, Australia, Denmark, Korea, and Argentina - have flocked to Kentucky this year. Many of them got a boost from favorable exchange rates.
