California board has new executive director

Kirk Breed, a California racing lobbyist the past 18 years and a lifelong horseman, has been appointed executive director of the California Horse Racing Board. Breed fills the position vacated by Ingrid Fermin, whose resignation was effective Jan. 7.

Migliore wins Woolf Award

Jockey Richard Migliore, the winner of eight riding titles at Aqueduct in the 1980s and 1990s and a mainstay in Southern California for the last 16 months, won the 2008 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, Santa Anita racetrack announced on Saturday.

A ceremony in honor of Migliore will be held at Santa Anita on March 30.

The award is voted on by jockeys nationwide, recognizing accomplishments and personal character. Migliore, 43, outpolled Roberto Gonzalez, Aaron Gryder, Randall Meier, and Mario Pino.

9.8-second work tops at Calder

Hip No. 62, a Sky Mesa colt out of Secondary School, topped the work tab Friday at the under-tack show for Fasig-Tipton's Calder select 2-year-old sale at Calder in Miami on Tuesday, covering an eighth of a mile in 9.80 seconds.

Cleveland Wheeler, agent, is the consignor of Hip No. 62. The dark bay or brown colt is the second foal for his dam, a stakes-winning Honor Grades mare.

Kentucky panel calls for changes in casino proposal

A committee set up by Gov. Steve Beshear of Kentucky recommended on Tuesday that lawmakers make significant changes to the governor's proposal to award 12 casino licenses in the state through a constitutional amendment.

Keeneland to offer 191 in evening sessions

The Keeneland Association has cataloged 191 horses to its upcoming April 2-year-olds in training sale, down from the 227 horses cataloged last season.

The sale will have a new format this year, expanding from one session to two and selling in the evening rather than the afternoon. The auction will be held on April 8 and 9, with sessions beginning at 7 p.m. in the Keeneland sale pavilion.

An under-tack show will take place April 7 at Keeneland, starting at 10:30 a.m.

Breeders' group elects directors

The Consignors and Commercial Breeders Association has elected three new members to its 13-member board of directors.

The new directors are Darrell Brown of Stonereath Farm, Neil Howard of Gainesway, and Martha Jane Mulholland of Mulholland Springs.

Directors who were reelected for the 2008-2009 term were Robbie Lyons of Hartwell Farm, Joe Seitz of Brookdale Farm, Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Farm, and Rob Whiteley of Liberation Farm.

TVG revenue drops a bit

Television Games Network had revenue of $56.6 million in 2007, down 1 percent from its revenue in 2006, according to financial documents released by the company's parent, Gemstar-TV Guide International.

The documents provided only revenue, not expenses or income, for the network, which broadcasts live horse races and operates an account-wagering system. Gemstar had total revenue of $627.7 million in 2007, so TVG provided approximately 9 percent of the company's revenue.

The long tug-of-war over the New York Racing Association's franchise to operate Aqueduct, Belmont, and Saratoga came to an end on Wednesday with the passage of legislation that will extend the franchise until 2033 and avert a shutdown of the most prominent racing circuit on the East Coast.

Fasig-Tipton Texas sale smaller

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged 303 juveniles to its April 1 2-year-olds in training auction at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.

That number is down from last year's catalog of 355, reflecting a general 2-year-old market trend of smaller catalogs this year.

Fasig-Tipton officials hope the 2008 catalog's sire power will be a draw.
