Out to keep the ball rolling

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s two-day March select sale will take place March 18-19 in the middle of a juvenile auction season that has so far been turbulent.

The auction year opened strongly in Ocala, Fla., a month ago, when the OBS February select sale set records for average price ($157,640) and median ($125,000). But the juvenile market's upper reaches at Fasig-Tipton's Feb. 26 Calder sale and the recent Barretts March auction fell short of 2007 levels.

Adena Springs South, Frank Stronach's farm in Williston, Fla., will send 136 homebred juveniles through the auction ring on Monday in an event that has become a staple of the Florida juvenile sale circuit and of Adena's marketing program.

"People come here, see the facilities and how the horses are handled and treated - it's a great selling point," said Mark Roberts, manager of Adena Springs South. "And it helps us make our stallions. We can showcase our progeny a little better, and that's basically the philosophy."
