Steeplechase group sets steroid policy

The National Steeplechase Association said Friday it had approved a rule banning all steroids except stanozolol, boldenone, nandrolone, and testosterone. Those four will be allowed to test at trace levels.

"With all that is going on in the world of Thoroughbred racing, we just felt the need to follow suit and be proactive," said the association's director of racing, Bill Gallo, in a release.

Ocala previews start Saturday

The under-tack shows for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June 2-year-old sale will take place this Saturday and Sunday. Both sessions will be at the sales company's facility in Ocala, Fla., beginning each day at 8 a.m.

The auction will take place at OBS on June 17-18 beginning at 10:30 a.m. daily and will be available online to viewers at www.obssales.com.

Hip Nos. 1-296, selling June 17, will breeze on Saturday. Hip Nos. 297-591, selling June 18, will breeze on Sunday.

House subcommittee slates hearing on sport

A federal House subcommittee that has focused on the use of drugs in sports has scheduled a hearing for June 19 to examine the racing industry's existing regulations and to consider the intervention of the federal government in the sport.

Rep. Ed Whitfield, a Republican from Kentucky who is the ranking member of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection, said Wednesday in an interview the hearing will address a range of topics that primarily deal with the patchwork of rules governing the sport in the 38 major U.S. racing jurisdictions.

Barretts sets ban on steroid use

Barretts Equine Limited, the California-based sales company, will implement regulations for its upcoming Sept. 30 yearling auction that will prohibit the administration of any anabolic steroid within 45 days of the sale, the company's president, Gerald McMahon, said Wednesday.

Barretts is the fourth major sales company to implement a ban on steroids for yearlings, following Fasig-Tipton, Keeneland, and the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. Barretts had previously announced its intention to implement the ban for yearlings late last year.

New York takes steroid action

The New York State Racing and Wagering Board on Thursday approved a proposal that would regulate the administration of anabolic steroids in Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds who race in the state, although the rule will need to pass several regulatory hurdles before it can go into effect.

Darley distributes scholarships

Darley’s Flying Start management training program, which offers work experience and courses, has announced its scholarship recipients for 2008.

The 12 trainees are Michael Buckley (Ireland), Gary King (Ireland), Charlie Vaughan-Fowler (United Kingdom), Melanie Sauer (Germany), William Ajello (USA), Paul Anthony, Jr. (USA), Chance Timm (USA), Sorrell Schoenberg (Canada), Meagan Jamieson (Australia), Brian McGrath (Australia), Man Piu Wong (Hong Kong), and Jimmy Unwala (India).

The group will study and work in Ireland, Britain, the United States, Australia, and Dubai.

Big Brown adding to Claiborne legacy

LEXINGTON, Ky. - It's a dream scenario for most stud farms to have one of their sires' colts on the verge of winning the Triple Crown. But it's bittersweet for Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., because Big Brown's sire has been pensioned since 2005.

Big Brown's Kentucky Derby and Preakness wins can't give Boundary much commercial boost, but he does add luster to the farm's long record of success in the Triple Crown races. He is the 15th Kentucky Derby winner conceived at the Hancock family's farm, and six of those have gone on to win the Triple Crown - so far.

Farm bill veto overturned

Congress voted Thursday to override President Bush's Wednesday veto of the 2007 Farm Bill, legislation that includes provisions to allow a standard three-year depreciation schedule for racehorses.
