U.S. handle slips in August

B.C. yearling sale average dips

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The average yearling price at the yearling and mixed sale held on Tuesday at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, British Columbia, dropped marginally from the 2007 sale, according to preliminary figures released by the provincial division of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society,

The average price for a yearling this year was $11,148 compared with $11,341 in 2007, 1.7 percent decline.

The gross, which includes figures for broodmares and horses of racing age, was up nearly 3 percent, at $1,158,400 compared with $1,129,150 in 2007.

Canadian yearling session up

Who's Big Daddy, a $60,000 colt by Where's the Ring, headed the preferred session of the annual Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's yearling auction at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion on Saturday.

Scott Fairlie purchased the sale topper from Gardiner Farm Limited, agent. Who's Big Daddy is a full brother to stakes winner Cawaja Beach, who is trained by Fairlie.

Bill Farish bought the second-highest-priced yearling, a $55,000 colt by Bold Executive, who was consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, as agent.

In this yearling market, buyers can be choosy

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Before last year's Keeneland September yearling sale, director of sales Geoffrey Russell issued a warning pertaining to the catalog's then-record number of 5,553 entries.

Even after years of solid selling at the September sale, he said, oversupply was threatening the Thoroughbred yearling market, and breeders should think carefully in coming years about what mares to breed and what yearlings to send to an increasingly selective marketplace.

Canadian auction session dips

A $195,000 colt by Tale of the Cat headed the select session of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's Canadian-bred yearling sale at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion on Tuesday.

A total of 149 yearlings grossed $5,830,500 at the sale. The average, $39,131, was down 2.4 percent from the $40,088 average at last year's sale, when 159 yearlings brought $6,374,000. The number of yearlings listed as not sold was 65, compared with 59 in 2007.

Winsong Farm purchased the sale-topper from Woodlands Farm as agent. The colt is the first foal from the winning Unbridled mare Remsheg.

Big declines for Washington sale

AUBURN, Wash. – A filly who sold for $92,000 provided the highlight in an otherwise grim renewal of the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association’s annual summer yearling sale on Tuesday.

The sales topper, a daughter of Cherokee Run and Silver Echo and thus a full sister to Barbara Shinpoch winner Cherokee Echo, was purchased by Dave and Jill Heerensperger of Bellevue, Wash., from the consignment of Northwest Farms.
