TOC approves change allowing owner-trainers to vote, stand on board

ARCADIA, Calif. – The membership of the Thoroughbred Owners of California has approved changes to its bylaws allowing owner-trainers and their spouses the right to vote and permitting the organization to hold an election that could expand the number of owner-trainers on the board of directors.

Voting on the bylaw changes ends Wednesday, but a press release published on the organization’s website earlier this week stated that 95 percent of the 1,265 returned ballots approved the change, and that “it is clear that the ballot question will be approved.”

Eclipse Award for photography goes to Bob Mayberger for steeplechase shot

Bob Mayberger of Albany, N.Y., has won the 2011 Media Eclipse Award for photography for his panoramic picture of Thoroughbreds jumping over a fence during the A.P. Smithwick Memorial Steeplechase at Saratoga Race Course on Aug. 4, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form, and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters announced Friday. The photo appeared on the Sports Illustrated Snapshot web site that same day.

This is the first Eclipse Award for Mayberger, 58, a staff photographer for Eclipse Sportswire.

Eclipse Awards: ESPN, HRTV, Thoroughbred Times win in media categories

ESPN, HRTV, and Thoroughbred Times have won Media Eclipse Awards, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form, and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters announced Thursday.

ESPN won for television-live racing programming for its telecast of the Breeders’ Cup Classic at the 2011 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The one-hour program at Churchill Down on Nov. 5 culminated with the upset victory of Drosselmeyer over Game On Dude in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic.

NYRA overcharges bettors $8.6M, will lower takeouts to correct error

The Jockey Club on Friday launched a public website allowing users to browse rulings issued against Thoroughbred trainers.

The website, located at www.thoroughbredrulings.com, allows users to search rulings by trainer, horse, racetrack, or racing jurisdiction. Ranges for queries can be narrowed by a range of dates or the amount of the fine levied.
