Jockey Club calls for stronger medication penalties, ban on furosemide

The Jockey Club on Friday morning released an updated version of rules it is seeking to have adopted by state racing commissions. The changes include stronger penalties for trainers whose horses repeatedly positive for medications violations, the Jockey Club said, and reiterates the Jockey Club’s opposition to the raceday use of furosemide.

Vet, farm president Colterjohn dead at age 55

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – A funeral reception will be held at Woodbine on Tuesday evening for Dr. Michael Colterjohn, who died at Orangeville’s Headwaters Health Care Centre at age 55 on Wednesday morning following a battle with brain cancer.

The reception will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Northern Dancer Room and follows a service for friends and family which will be held at the Egan Funeral Home chapel at 4 p.m.

Visitation at the Egan Funeral Home, located at 211 Queen Street South in Bolton, will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Injury data at New York tracks to be available to public

The New York State Racing and Wagering Board plans to make its injury data for the past three years at New York racetracks available to the public through the launch of a searchable database next week, the board’s chairman, John Sabini, said at a meeting of the board on Wednesday.

New Jersey committee to discuss casino gambling at Meadowlands

A New Jersey state assembly committee plans to hold hearings later this year on whether the legislature should approve casino gambling at the Meadowlands, according to members of the committee.

Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver and Assemblyman Ruben Ramos, both Democrats, said that the Assembly Regulatory Oversight and Gambling Committee will host the public hearings “later this year,” but no dates were announced. Ramos is the chairman of the committee.

Ward requests later start to Kentucky commission duties

John Ward, the Kentucky Derby-winning trainer who was recently appointed executive director of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, has asked the state to push back his official start date from April 1 to April 16, according to the agency that oversees the commission.

Legislators renew push for bill authorizing federal oversight of racing

The two co-sponsors of a bill introduced during last year’s Congress that would subject horse racing to federal regulation have said they will renew an effort to push for adoption of the legislation this year.

Late Tuesday, Rep. Ed Whitfield, a Republican from Kentucky, released a statement calling for support of the bill, which was opposed by most racing organizations after it was introduced last year. The other sponsor, Sen. Tom Udall, a Democrat from New Mexico, called for the passage of the bill Monday.

Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame: Russell Baze among 2012 nominees

Canadian native Russell Baze is the winningest rider in North American history.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Russell Baze, who was born in Vancouver and went on to become the winningest North American rider in history, is among this year’s nominees to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.

Baze, 53, was among three candidates in the jockey/trainer category put forward by the Hall of Fame’s nominating committee for consideration by the 20-member election committee.

Election committee voters also will choose from three candidates in the male horse, female horse, builder, and veterans categories. Any individual receiving at least eight votes will be inducted.

The Thoroughbred Owners of California will have seven new members on its 15-person board following an election held in late winter, the organization announced on Friday.

Incumbent board members Madeline Auerbach, Bob Baffert, Dennis Cardoza, Mark Dedomenico, Ed Moger, Jack Owens, Mike Pegram, and Pablo Suarez will be joined by newly elected members Mike Harrington, George Krikorian, Ron McAnally, John Sadler, George Todaro, Kathy Walsh and Mike Wellman.
