Illinois legislature fails to take up racetrack funding bill

Senate Bill 66, which would resolve the Illinois Racing Board funding issue that continues to imperil the 2014 Illinois racing season, was not called for a vote during a session of the Illinois legislature on Tuesday.

The legislature convened in a special session and passed long-awaited major legislation that would reform the state’s pension system. Caught up in that action, legislators had no time or attention left to deal with a bill that must be passed by Jan. 31 to avert sharp cutbacks in the Illinois racing schedule.

Hall of Fame honors Beyer, two others - 1386092630

A committee of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame has selected Andy Beyer, Kent Hollingsworth, and George F. T. Ryall for induction into the hall’s Media Roll of Honor, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Beyer, who developed the popular Beyer Speed Figures, is the longtime racing correspondent for the Washington Post, and his columns are frequently reprinted in the Daily Racing Form. He has also written several books on handicapping and racing.

Medication group addresses Standardbred regulations

Regulations governing the use of anti-inflammatory corticosteroids and the bronchial dilator clenbuterol should be the same for both Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds, the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium said on Tuesday after releasing two papers examining the effects of the drugs in both breeds.

Florida proposing change to simulcast host-track regulations

Florida’s racing regulatory agency has proposed a modification to its rules that would require tracks to run at least three days a week in order to qualify as host tracks and be able to sell simulcast signals in the state.

Betfair income rises sharply

U.S. Anti-Doping Agency chief to testify at U.S. House subcommittee hearing

A U.S. House subcommittee scheduled to conduct a hearing Thursday to discuss legislation that would require racetracks to fund an “independent anti-doping agency” to write and enforce the sport’s drug policies has called six witnesses, including Travis Tygart, the chief executive of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which is expected to seek the contract to conduct the sport’s drug tests if the legislation passes.
