Churchill Downs Inc. net revenue falls 5 percent in 2013

Churchill Downs Inc. had net income of $55 million in 2013, down 5 percent compared with net income of $58.3 million in 2012, while posting record revenues for the third year in a row, according to financial documents released by the company late on Wednesday.

NYRA hires Rogan as chief compliance officer

Kevin Rogan has been hired as the chief compliance officer for the New York Racing Association, it was announced Wednesday. The announcement came at a brief open session of a meeting of the NYRA Reorganization board held in Manhattan.

Rogan takes over the position formerly held by Ken Handal, whose contract was not renewed in 2013. Handal also was acting chief counsel for NYRA.

Kentucky Derby: NBC, Churchill Downs reach TV rights agreement through 2025

NBC has reached a 10-year extension with Churchill Downs on the broadcast rights to the Kentucky Derby through 2025, the principals announced Wednesday.

The extension includes the broadcast rights to the Kentucky Oaks along with other programming on the days of the Oaks and Derby, the companies said in a joint release. Those rights will extend to NBC’s family of networks and its supporting websites, including the rights to live streaming.

Florida Derby, Santa Anita Derby will air live on NBC Sports

Two major preps for the Kentucky Derby, the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on March 29 and the Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita Park on April 5, will be broadcast live on NBC Sports, an official of the parent company of the two tracks confirmed on Tuesday.

Cheltenham: Sprinter Sacre dull in workout, will miss Queen Mother Champion Chase

Sprinter Sacre, the winner of nine consecutive steeplechases in England and Ireland until he was pulled up in his last start in December, will not start in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham, England, on March 12, trainer Nicky Henderson told the Racing Post on Sunday.

Henderson said Sprinter Sacre was dull in a workout Saturday.

“He’s not showing the same brilliance as last year,” he said.

Santa Anita stakes topic of California Horse Racing Board discussion

ARCADIA, Calif. - Santa Anita received tentative approval from the California Horse Racing Board for its first-ever spring-summer meeting, to run from April 25 to June 29, but not before racing board members expressed concern about the track’s proposed stakes schedule and the absence of three historic races.

Santa Anita will run a 40-day meeting, largely on a four-day per week basis, during a time of year Hollywood Park previously ran. Hollywood Park closed permanently in December.

Los Alamitos: Two trainers fined, suspended for clenbuterol positives

Two trainers based at Los Alamitos have been fined and suspended for clenbuterol positives from late 2013, and two others face the possibility of similar sanctions, according to rulings recently published by Los Alamitos stewards.

Los Alamitos stewards James Dreyer, Ruben Moreno and George Slender issued rulings in late January fining and suspended Jose Moreno and Valentin Zamudio.

Florida anti-greyhound racing groups push to separate casino licenses from racetracks

A coalition of animal-welfare groups opposed to greyhound racing launched a campaign in Florida on Wednesday seeking to push state legislators to support a bill that would end a requirement that casino licenses be issued only to operating racetracks.

Churchill Downs Inc. and the New York Racing Association remained in negotiations Wednesday over a simulcast contract for 2014, but a NYRA official said that the association did not anticipate a “signal disruption” when Aqueduct resumes racing Friday.
