Jockey Club presses forward on vet records

Representatives of the Jockey Club on Friday morning will contact the owners and trainers of horses entered in the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby who have pledged to make their horses’ vet records publicly available, a spokesperson for the organization said on Thursday.

The plan is to acquire 14 days’ worth of vet records for each of the horses and upload scanned images of the records to horseracingreform.com, a website funded by the Jockey Club that serves as a platform for the organization’s goals, according to the spokesperson, Bob Curran.

North Dakota approves new drug rules, penalties

North Dakota’s racing commission has approved a set of medication rules and penalty guidelines that have the support of a handful of national racing organizations seeking to reform how the sport regulates drugs.

At a meeting on April 25, the commission approved the new rules, which contain regulations for 26 medications that will be allowed to be administered therapeutically to horses. The commission also approved new penalty guidelines that carry strict penalties for licensees that have multiple violations, based on a points system similar to that in effect for driver’s licenses.

Purse redistributed after Masochistic tests positive for sedative

ARCADIA, Calif. – A portion of the purse of a claiming race for maidens March 15 at Santa Anita has been redistributed after fifth-place finisher Masochistic tested positive for the sedative acepromazine, according to a ruling issued Sunday by Santa Anita stewards.

In addition, jockey Omar Berrio’s ride on Mascohistic has come under scrutiny by the stewards, who may conduct a formal hearing on the manner in which the 4-year-old first-time starter was ridden.

CHRB takes hard look at Los Angeles County Fair meet location

The proposed relocation of the Los Angeles County Fair meeting at Fairplex Park in September to Los Alamitos came under scrutiny Friday from the California Horse Racing Board, although the board did not take any action on the issue.

The racing board is expected to approve or deny the proposed relocation of the race at its next meeting, May 22 at Santa Anita.

“I don’t think anyone on the board has expressed a conclusion on this,” Chairman Chuck Winner said after a lengthy discussion.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Hall of Fame basketball coach Rick Pitino has purchased a 10 percent share in Empress of Midway, whose starting status in the Kentucky Oaks was confirmed shortly thereafter due to the defections early Friday of In Tune and Room Service.

Pitino was in attendance to watch his latest acquisition breeze an easy half-mile in 49.72 seconds Friday, after which the coach of the 2013 NCAA champion Louisville Cardinals headed to the airport to begin a five-day recruiting trip in Dallas and Sacramento, Calif.

Arizona legislature passes account-wagering bill

A bill that would allow account wagering over the internet in Arizona passed with widespread support in the waning hours of the state legislature on Thursday morning, potentially opening up a state that had cracked down on the practice seven years ago.

Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican, has 10 days to sign the bill, which passed the House late Wednesday night by a vote of 51-5 and then the Senate by a vote of 23-3, according to legislative records. The legislature adjourned on Thursday morning shortly after the bill was passed.
