Breeders' Cup names Keeneland as 2015 host

ARCADIA, Calif. – The Breeders’ Cup championship races will be run at familiar and new venues from 2015 to 2017, the organization announced Tuesday.

For the first time, the Breeders’ Cup championship days will be run at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., on Oct. 30-31, 2015. For 2016 and 2017, the event will be in California – for a record ninth time at Santa Anita on Nov. 4-5, 2016, and for the first time at Del Mar, north of San Diego, on Nov. 3-4, 2017.

Supreme Court upholds ban on sports betting in New Jersey

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday upheld a ban on sports betting in New Jersey, stopping a bid to bring sports books for professional and college athletics to Atlantic City casinos and the state’s racetracks, Associated Press reports.

The ruling supported those made in lower courts, which denied New Jersey’s sports betting law because it conflicts with a federal law that only allows state-sanctioned sports betting in Nevada, Oregon, Delaware, and Montana.

McCarron to retire from North American Racing Academy

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Chris McCarron, the Hall of Fame jockey, will retire from his full-time teaching position at the North American Racing Academy at the close of the fall semester, the college that administers the academy announced Friday.

McCarron, 59, who has been the head riding instructor at the Lexington academy since its founding in 2006, will continue to provide instruction on a part-time basis, according to the Bluegrass Community and Technical College.

Los Alamitos gets Fairplex Park dates

CYPRESS, Calif. – The California Horse Racing Board on Thursday approved the transfer of the Fairplex Park meeting at the Los Angeles County Fair to Los Alamitos starting in September, a decision that ends 71 years of live racing at the Pomona racetrack.

By a vote of 5-0, the racing board approved the transfer of 11 days of racing from Sept. 5-21. A formal application for the race meeting will be heard by the racing board later this summer.

Reporting geldings more complicated than it seems

In Kentucky, it is the responsibility of the claimant to determine the sex of a horse, and any error in reporting the sex of a horse cannot be used as grounds to void the claim.

Belmont races still being aired on local television for now

ELMONT, N.Y. - Though a contract between the New York Racing Association and New York City has expired, the races from Belmont Park will continue to be shown on a city government access channel for an undefined period of time, according to a NYRA official.

A contract between NYRA and the city that allows the races to be broadcast on the New York City government access channel (1994 and 71 on Time Warner Cable, 27 on FIOS, and 74 on Cablevision in Brooklyn and the Bronx) expired at midnight Monday. But the races from Belmont Park were broadcast on those channels on Wednesday.

Pennsylvania report critical of Agriculture Department

Pennsylvania’s Auditor General released a report on Wednesday claiming that the state’s Agriculture Department nearly bankrupted a fund it oversees that provides for the regulation of horseracing. The report says the Agriculture Department overbilled the fund and charged it for millions of dollars in services it could not document over a four-year period ending in 2013.

Report: Keeneland to host 2015 Breeders' Cup

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Breeders’ Cup will announce later this month that the two-day event will be held for the first time at Keeneland Race Course in 2015, according to a report in the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Officials for Keeneland and the Breeders’ Cup on Tuesday would not comment on the report, which also said the event will return to Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., in 2016 and then be moved in 2017 to another first-time venue, Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, Calif. The report cited two unidentified sources “with knowledge of the plans.”
