Penn National Gaming posts lower second-quarter revenue

Penn National Gaming Inc., the large casino and racetrack operator, had net income of $2.8 million on sharply lower revenue of $652.1 million in the second quarter of 2014, according to financial statements released Thursday.

Revenue was down 14.4 percent in the quarter compared to the same quarter last year, with revenue from the company’s gambling operations down 15.2 percent. Operating expenses in the quarter were $628.8 million, down 12 percent, according to the financial statements.

Farish wins runoff election for Breeders’ Cup board seat

William S. Farish Jr., a member of the family that owns Lane’s End Farm in central Kentucky, has won a runoff in an election for a four-year seat on the Breeders’ Cup board of directors, according to the organization.

Farish, the current chairman of the board, beat out Bobby Flay, the New York-based celebrity chef and horse owner, in runoff voting Monday and Tuesday, the Breeders’ Cup said. Flay will receive a one-year seat on the board.

TCA to honor vets Bramlage, Fallon, and Lavin

Three veterinarians, Dr. Larry R. Bramlage, Dr. Edward H. Fallon and Dr. A. Gary Lavin, will be the Honored Guests at the Thoroughbred Club of America’s annual dinner, held on Sept. 28 at Keeneland Race Course.

The three were selected by the TCA’s board of directors.

Breeders' Cup adds two new members to board

Barbara Banke, the California-based owner of Stonestreet Farm, and Dan Pride, the chief operating officer of Darley in central Kentucky, will fill two of the six open seats on the Breeders’ Cup board of directors, the Breeders’ Cup said on Thursday.

Banke and Pride, who will serve four-year terms, were both newly elected to the Breeders’ Cup board, which is chosen by the organization’s members. Elliott Walden, the president of WinStar Farm in central Kentucky, was re-elected to a four-year term.

Trainer Chatterpaul suspended, fined for medication violations

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Naipaul Chatterpaul was suspended for 60 days and fined $5,000 by the New York State Gaming Commission due to four medication violations.

An additional 120 day-suspension was stayed for two years beginning Sept. 15 provided Chatterpaul does not accrue any additional equine violations for which he is found responsible.

The suspension was to begin Friday – opening day at Saratoga and one day before his 47th birthday – and runs through Sept. 15.

CHRB won't target casual pool players

The California Horse Racing Board will not seek out individuals who are pooling their funds to make bets on state races despite its recent ruling that such common practices are illegal, an official of the board said this week in response to questions about its recent determination that account-wagering companies were violating the law when they pooled bets from their customers.

Kentucky commission distributes $1 million to tracks

Kentucky close to setting threshold level for cobalt

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission is close to determining a threshold level for illegal administrations of cobalt, the naturally occurring mineral that is believed to be in use in racing as a blood-doping agent, the commission’s equine medical director said at a meeting of the commission on Wednesday.
