Gulfstream will hold Lasix-free juvenile races

Beginning in 2015, Gulfstream Park will hold a number of juvenile races that prohibit the raceday use of Lasix.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Gulfstream Park, the South Florida racetrack owned by Frank Stronach, will begin to write races for 2-year-olds that will ban the raceday use of the anti-bleeding medication furosemide beginning in the summer of 2015, officials for Stronach said Wednesday.

Fort Erie Race Track sold for undisclosed sum

The 338-acre parcel of land that is home to Fort Erie Race Track was recently sold to a partnership led by Buffalo, N.Y.-based developer Carl Paladino for an undisclosed price. The Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium, which operates live racing at Fort Erie, announced the sale Tuesday.

The partnership purchased the property from Nordic Gaming, which had owned the land that housed the track since 1996.

Ontrack business up at Saratoga; all-sources handle down

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Just past the halfway point of the 2014 Saratoga meet, ontrack business is strong, while all-sources handle is down compared with the same period last year.

After 22 days of racing, ontrack handle on Saratoga’s races is $77,598,764, a 2.2 percent increase over the $75,874,209 wagered ontrack through the same period last summer.

All-sources handle, however, is $297,695,784, down 4.9 percent compared with $313,233,276 wagered through the first 22 days last year.

Christie vetoes sports betting bill

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey has vetoed a bill that would have allowed sports betting at the state’s racetracks and casinos, citing a federal ruling that has already deemed the practice illegal in the state.

The veto strikes down a bill that legislators crafted to work around the federal ruling that prevented a similar law from going into effect, calling it a violation of a 1978 federal ban on sports betting. Casinos and tracks had pushed for the latest law.

Donnally to speak at N.Y. Chaplaincy Fundraiser

Eddie Donnally, the former jockey and journalist who is now an ordained minister and chaplain, will be the keynote speaker at the New York Chaplaincy Fundraiser on Wednesday in the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.,according to the organization.

Donnally is the author of an autobiography, “Ride the White Horse,” chronicling his racing career, substance-abuse problems, and pursuit of a career in ministry. Tickets to the fundraiser cost $100.

The New York Chaplaincy provides care to backstretch workers at New York racetracks.

Churchill to continue funding Jockeys’ Guild programs

The Jockeys’ Guild and Churchill Downs Inc. have renewed for three years an agreement that requires Churchill to provide funds for the Guild’s programs, the organizations announced Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, aside from the length of the agreement.
