Bet This, Not That: Video Tutorial

Part one of this two-part tutorial looks shows you how to use the trainer tool to access all of a trainer’s starters from the past five years, as well as how to use the past performance filters to highlight races that match the conditions of the current race. Needmore Flattery repeats as Ohio's top horse for 2014

Needmore Flattery will start in Sunday's $50,000 Tomboy Stakes at Belterra Park.

Trainer Tim Hamm collected his sixth Ohio Horse of the Year title in the past 10 years when his filly Needmore Flattery repeated as the state’s champion Thoroughbred for 2014.

The awards were announced during the Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners dinner at Darby Dan Farm near Columbus.

Needmore Flattery, who won six stakes and $240,000 from 10 starts last season, was also honored as Ohio’s top 3-year-old filly and champion female handicap horse.

Virginia horsemen claim Colonial Downs owes them $420,000

The Virginia Racing Commission expects to conduct a hearing in early May to determine whether Colonial Downs is in violation of the state’s racing law by retaining all of the revenue from its account-wagering operation for nearly a five-month period beginning late last year, according to officials with the commission.

Charles Town to cut 27 days from schedule

The West Virginia Racing Commission has granted a request by Charles Town to drop 27 racing days from its 2015 schedule in an attempt to keep purses at their current levels.

Charles Town, with support from the Charles Town Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, requested the date reduction last year after being assigned 220 dates, the legislatively required minimum.

Beginning in July, Charles Town will drop 23 Tuesday night cards. The West Virginia racino also will not race July 1-3 or on Dec. 30.

Turf Paradise: Two recent euthanasia injections contaminated

Two horses euthanized at Turf Paradise in Phoenix during the past six months tested positive for a drug used to treat attention-deficit disorder in humans that has been traced to contamination of the injections used to put the horses down, according to a racing official with knowledge of an ongoing investigation into the results.

Handle up 8 percent at Turfway Park meet

Turfway Park in northern Kentucky closed its winter-spring meet March 29 with an increase of 8 percent in average daily all-sources handle, according to figures released by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

Gross handle for 37 dates at a meet that began Jan. 1 was almost $63.5 million, up 34 percent over corresponding dates at the 2014 winter-spring meet, when only 30 dates were run. The numbers would have been bigger except for a sharp drop for Spiral Stakes Day, March 21, when handle was $4.7 million, down from the nearly $6.1 million handled on Spiral Stakes Day in 2014.

Oaklawn honors former jockey/trainer Kurinec

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Oaklawn welcomed an old friend back to the winner’s circle last week when 98-year-old former jockey and trainer Frank A. Kurinec was part of a race presentation April 1. Kurinec has resided at an assisted-living facility in Hot Springs in the seven years since a car accident forced him to give up his position working one of the gaps as a spotter for clockers during morning training hours at Oaklawn.

The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission has revoked the licenses of four racetrack veterinarians who entered guilty pleas last month to illegally administering substances to horses on race day, according to copies of the rulings provided by the commission.

Les Bois Park: Bill to shut down historical-racing machines vetoed

Historical-racing machines at Les Bois Park in Boise, Idaho, will remain operational due to a veto by Gov. Butch Otter on Monday of a bill that would have prohibited the devices.

The operators of Les Bois had said the bill would have forced the track to shut down. Les Bois uses the devices, which closely resemble slot machines, for year-round revenue and to supplement purses at a summer meet that is scheduled to run approximately 30 days this year.

AmTote files suit against Kentucky Downs, Encore Gaming

The bet-processing company AmTote has filed a lawsuit alleging breach of contract and intellectual-property theft against Kentucky Downs and a company associated with the track over the operation of Kentucky Downs’s historical-racing betting machines.
