Humane Society affiliate joins push for federal oversight of racing

Waldrop pitches tax changes before panel

Alex Waldrop, the president of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, appeared before a panel of Treasury and IRS officials on Wednesday to deliver testimony in support of proposed tax-rule changes that would benefit horseplayers. According to the NTRA, Waldrop cited “outdated, unfair, and overly burdensome” regulations in his testimony.

California enacts stricter rules for whip use

ARCADIA, Calif. - The California Horse Racing Board is enacting tougher whip rules for jockeys, effective next month.

The new rule will restrict riders to using the whip no more “than three times in succession without giving the horse a chance to respond before using the riding crop again.” Currently, there is no restriction on the number of strikes permitted, although rules are in place to penalize a rider who causes welts or breaks the skin of a horse, and to restrict the use of whips to shoulders or flanks.

Fatal inury data subject at Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit

An epidemiologist who is examining data on fatal injuries in racehorses will provide an updated analysis of the figures at the July 8 Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., according to a schedule released on Friday by the conference’s administrators.

Belmont Stakes: NYRA pleased with how smoothly things went

Compared with 2014, the crowd of 90,000 at Belmont Park on Saturday had far fewer problems.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Though there was a predictable drop in handle, Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, for the most part, was logistically, aesthetically, and historically a success for the New York Racing Association, officials said.

There were far fewer complaints from fans who attended Saturday’s Belmont Stakes – where American Pharoah became Thoroughbred racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner – than there were last year, when concessionaires ran out of food, wifi and cellular service was poor, and fans were stranded for hours trying to leave the grounds.

International simulcasting subject of first day of Pan American Conference

The Jockey Club conducted the inaugural Pan American Conference in New York City on June 4-5, and the well-attended event produced a number of interesting takes on the state of racing and breeding in the Americas. Speakers on some of the panels discussed how to make commerce between the Americas more favorable for racing and for a stronger partnership to grow the sport.

Rep. Pitts reintroduces medication-oversight bill

U.S. Rep. Joe Pitts of Pennsylvania has reintroduced legislation he sponsored two years ago that would appoint a private company, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, as the overseer of racing’s medication policies, according to his office.
