NYRA cautious despite big start to Saratoga meet

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Despite a fabulous start to the 2015 Saratoga meet, New York Racing Association officials don’t expect the good times to roll all summer long, the NYRA board said in a Wednesday meeting here.

Through the first 16 days of the meet (through Monday), all-sources handle was $260.4 million, a 19.1 percent increase over last year and 17.9 percent ahead of what NYRA budgeted for the season.

Drug debate comes out in the open

Gessmann elected president of National HBPA

Leroy Gessmann, the president of the Iowa Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, was elected president of the National HBPA at the organization’s summer convention last weekend in Denver, according to the organization.

Gessmann owned Sure Shot Biscuit, the only Iowa-bred millionaire in U.S. history, and Miss Macy Sue, who finished third in the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. He is replacing Robin Richards, who stepped down after serving a three-year term.

Janney elected Jockey Club chairman

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Stuart Janney III, The Jockey Club’s vice chairman since 2010, was elected the chairman of the organization at a board meeting Saturday, filling the spot vacated by Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps, who announced his resignation earlier this year, effective with the Saturday meeting.

USADA under the microscope

Churchill's net income dips despite record revenue

Churchill Downs Inc. had net income of $55 million and record revenue of $409.2 million in the second quarter of 2015, according to financial documents released Wednesday.

Revenue was up 35 percent compared with the second quarter of last year, almost entirely due to the acquisition by Churchill late last year of the mobile-game developer Big Fish. Churchill’s racing operations, bolstered by its Kentucky Derby in May, generated revenue of $155 million, leading all of Churchill’s segments for the quarter.

Commission tables vote on 3-day Suffolk Downs meet

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission tabled a vote on whether to approve three days of live racing this year at Suffolk Downs in East Boston after a group of horsemen contended that a company owned by Frank Stronach was interested in leasing the track, according to officials at the meeting.
