Fines, suspensions handed out in Mahoning mix-up

Stewards at Mahoning Valley Race Course near Youngstown, Ohio, have suspended the track’s horse identifier for 60 days and issued penalties to three other people for their roles in a mix-up at the track in which a winning gelding ran in a race restricted to maiden fillies and mares.

Thomas Clark, the identifier, will be suspended from Nov. 26 to Jan. 24 of next year and fined $500 under the ruling. He was suspended by the owner of Mahoning Valley shortly after the mix-up came to light on Nov. 4, the day of the race.

Turfway applies for slot-like machines

Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., has applied to the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission for a permit to operate “historical racing machines,” the devices in place at three Kentucky racetracks that closely resemble slot machines, according to an agenda for the Dec. 1 meeting released on Monday.

New York clears Asmussen of major allegations, fines him

Contrary to allegations from PETA, Steve Asmussen's horses "were well cared for," a Kentucky Horse Racing Commission investigation concluded.

The New York State Gaming Commission on Monday dismissed allegations of widespread animal abuse against leading trainer Steve Asmussen that had been lodged by an animal-rights group nearly two years ago but fined him $10,000 for seemingly minor transgressions involving the use of a feed supplement.

Three charges against Luzzi dropped

Mike Luzzi rides Wednesday for the first time in 10 months.

Though jockey Mike Luzzi pleaded guilty to one charge of criminal mischief, three other charges brought against him from a domestic dispute involving his wife during the summer at Saratoga were dropped, according to Donald Matusik, Luzzi’s attorney.

According to Matusik, Luzzi paid a $250 fine for damaging his wife Tania’s cellphone during an argument at their Saratoga rental home Sept. 4, hours after Luzzi had returned to race riding following a 10-month layoff precipitated by injury.

New York now can race on Palm Sunday

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill on Saturday allowing New York racetracks to conduct live racing and take simulcast bets on Palm Sunday, lifting an unusual 42-year-old ban. Palm Sunday is March 20 in 2016.

Ritvo says goal is to race 200 days a year in Maryland

LAUREL, Md. – A crowd of about 400 turned out Friday evening for a town-hall meeting at Laurel Park, where Tim Ritvo, chief operating officer of The Stronach Group, discussed his company's view of the future for Maryland racing.

Other speakers included Bruce Quade of the Maryland Racing Commission; Tim Keefe, president of the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association; Josh Ponds and Cricket Goodall of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association; and Jim Steele, president of the Maryland Million.

Ruling in Mahoning Valley mix-up expected by Monday

The individuals involved in an incident at Mahoning Valley Race Course near Youngstown, Ohio, in which a gelding was mistakenly identified as a mare and allowed to run in the wrong race have waived their rights to a hearing, and penalties are expected to be announced early next week, the executive director of the state’s racing commission said on Friday.

Churchill Downs Inc. buys back $138M of stock from Duchossois Group

Churchill Downs Inc. has entered into an agreement to buy back nearly $140 million worth of its stock from its largest shareholder, the company said late on Thursday.

The agreement allows Churchill to buy 944,756 of its shares from The Duchossois Group, a private company headed by former Arlington International Racecourse owner Dick Duchossois. The total cost of the transaction will be $138.1 million, at a price of $146.13 per share, Churchill said.

California horsemen look for alternatives to stabling at Los Alamitos

Off-track stabling in Southern California may be moved from Los Alamitos to Del Mar this winter after officials with Southern California racetracks and horsemen’s organizations have been unable to reach a long-term agreement for year-round stabling at Los Alamitos.

The issue was discussed at length at Thursday’s California Horse Racing Board meeting at Del Mar.
