Field favored after first day of betting in Pool 2 of Kentucky Derby Future Wager

After the first full day of of betting, the mutuel field was a solid favorite in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. The pool opened Friday at noon Eastern and runs through Sunday at 6 p.m.

On win handle of $86,970, the field, the 24th or “all others” option, is the 8-5 favorite, followed by Mohaymen (4-1), Nyquist (6-1), Mor Spirit (12-1), Airoforce (17-1), and Brody’s Cause (17-1).

Pool 1, in which the field closed as the 3-5 favorite, ran Nov. 26-29. Pool 3 is set for March 11-13 and Pool 4 for April 1-3.

Trainer Dale Romans sued by brother

Jerry Romans, a former trainer, has filed a lawsuit alleging that his brother, the Eclipse Award-winning trainer Dale Romans, mismanaged horses he owned, according to multiple reports.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in Jefferson Circuit Court in Louisville, Ky., according to the reports. Efforts to obtain the lawsuit were unsuccessful. Contacted on Thursday, Dale Romans would not comment.

Five stakes at Los Alamitos spring meeting

Los Alamitos will run five stakes, including two graded stakes for sprinters, during its three-week spring Thoroughbred meeting from April 14 to May 1.

The 12-day season is the first of three Thoroughbred meetings at Los Alamitos this year, followed by brief meetings in September and December. This is the first year that Los Alamitos has run an April meeting. The track’s first meetings of 2014 and 2015 were held in July.

Parx delays opening of track for training until Monday

Parx Racing is pushing back the reopening of its track for training until Monday.

Parx had been scheduled to open for “limited training” on Friday, but Sam Elliott, the track’s director of racing, said late Thursday afternoon that the track was not quite ready and that track superintendent Gerard Weipert needed to finish leveling the base around the inner part of the racing surface.

Texas tracks get okay to continue racing until Feb. 29

Chuck Trout, executive director of the Texas Racing Commission, issued a memo to the state's tracks and horsemen's organizations on Thursday informing them live racing and simulcasting can be conducted through at least the close of business on Feb. 29.

The commission has funding for administrative costs approved through that date in a temporary plan, but there was intent to end live racing and simulcasting on Feb. 16  in order to wrap up outstanding business, like the clearing of post-race test samples, by Feb. 29.

Entry rule won't affect Risen Star lineup

Two more executives leaving NYRA

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - George Venizelos and John Durso Jr., both of whom have worked for the New York Racing Association for less than two years, are leaving NYRA to take jobs in the private sector, both confirmed on Thursday.

Venizelos, who started as vice-president and chief security officer at NYRA on Jan. 26, 2015, will be leaving next week to take a position at Quality Protection Services, a security company based in Manhattan.

Foreign announcers to try out for Santa Anita position

ARCADIA, Calif. – Two foreign-based announcers – Craig Evans of Singapore and David Fitzgerald of England – will call the races at Santa Anita on weekends later this month, auditioning for the permanent job to replace Trevor Denman.

Evans will call the races Feb. 20-21. Fitzgerald has been assigned Feb. 27-28. Track officials said earlier this month they want to give both announcers a two-day tryout to describe a variety of races.
