Pletcher hits 4,000-win milestone

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Todd Pletcher became the 10th trainer in North American racing history to win 4,000 races when his first-time starter Eagle Scout captured Friday’s fifth race at Gulfstream Park. A homebred son of Tapit, Eagle Scout is owned by WinStar Farm, for which Pletcher won his only Kentucky Derby with Super Saver in 2010. Luis Saez rode the winner Friday.

Quarantine lifted at Payson Park

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Department of Agriculture on Tuesday lifted the quarantine at Payson Park that had been in effect since a horse at the facility tested positive for the equine herpesvirus March 1. But Gulfstream Park officials said they will not accept entries from horses stabled at Payson Park until the standard 21-day quarantine period has expired.

Trainer Alfredo Velazquez gets win No. 1,000

Private Zone, winning the Cigar Mile, is being pointed for the Churchill Downs Sprint on Kentucky Derby Day.

Trainer Alfredo Velazquez scored his 1,000th career victory Tuesday when Rosie My Way won the first race at Parx.

Velazquez, a 71-year-old native of Puerto Rico, has been training since 1984. He has a 15 percent win average and purse earnings of more than $15.8 million.

Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation to fund more than $1 million in projects

The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation has approved the allocation of $1.16 million in funding for new and ongoing research projects, the group announced on Tuesday.

The funding will go toward 11 new research projects and eight projects that are in their second year of study, the foundation said. In addition, the board of the foundation approved two $15,000 grants to scientists studying equine issues.

New Jersey referendum could pave way for casino at Meadowlands

New Jersey voters will be asked in a referendum this November to decide whether the state should allow two new casinos to open outside of Atlantic City, opening up the possibility that the Meadowlands harness track will get a long-sought casino license.

The state’s legislature passed a bill on Monday putting the constitutional amendment on this year’s ballot, and Gov. Chris Christie has said that he will sign the legislation. The amendment would allow for two casinos in the northern part of New Jersey, where they would draw from the vast New York City metropolitan area.

Owner Vanderhyde dies at 67

Thomas Vanderhyde, a prominent owner in the Midwest in the mid-2000s, died last Thursday at age 67.

A resident of Grand Rapids, Mich., Vanderhyde was best known as the original owner of Even the Score, who won the Mardi Gras Handicap and placed in a pair of Grade 2 races before being sold to Ro Parra of Millennium Farms.
