Betfair to launch New Jersey exchange-wagering site on Tuesday

The first exchange-wagering site in the U.S. is expected to be launched on Tuesday as scheduled in New Jersey, though activity on the site will likely be limited in the first few days because of a paucity of live racing signals and the narrow reach of the operation.

Hubbard buys out partners in Ruidoso Downs

R.D. Hubbard is now the sole owner of Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico after buying out the interests of Ed Allred and Bruce Rimbo, the track announced Monday. Hubbard had owned 72 percent of Ruidoso Downs, which he first bought into in 1988.

Ruidoso is the home of the prestigious All American Futurity for Quarter Horses.

Hubbard’s grandson, Shaun Hubbard, has been the general manager of Ruidoso since 2012 and will now also take on the role of track president. Ruidoso opens its mixed meet for Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds on May 27.

Trainers Bonde, Sierra fined for medication violations

ARCADIA, Calif. - Trainers Jeff Bonde and Javier Sierra were fined $500 recently by Santa Anita track stewards for medication violations.

Bonde was cited after Tripski tested in excess of the permitted level of the corticosteroid Betamethasone after a third-place finish in the 10th race on March 26.

Sierra was fined after Gutsy Ruler, who finished second in the fourth race on March 6, tested positive for the prohibited medication Fulmethasone, also a corticosteroid.

Kentucky Derby TV ratings plummet

The race portion of a three-plus-hour broadcast of the Kentucky Derby on NBC Saturday posted a 9.3 overnight rating, according to the television network, down 14 percent compared with the overnight rating for the same portion of the broadcast last year.

The broadcast, which ran a half-hour beyond its slotted broadcast window because of a long delay in getting horses to the starting gate, had a 21 share, down 12.5 percent from the share last year. Share measures the percentage of televisions in use that are tuned to a broadcast.

Handle on U.S. races up 8.5 percent in April

Handle on U.S. races in April was up 8.5 percent, according to figures released Wednesday by Equibase, continuing a five-month trend in which handle has risen compared to the same months in 2015.

Handle during the month was $929.1 million, up from $859.5 million in April last year. This year, April had one additional weekend date than in April last year, and this year, the Florida Derby was held in April rather than March, as it was last year.
