Betfair encouraged by initial response to exchange wagering in New Jersey

California considers more liberal use of whip in deep stretch

ARCADIA, Calif. - California Thoroughbred jockeys will be allowed to use their whips with greater frequency in the last sixteenth of a mile under a proposed rule introduced at Thursday’s California Horse Racing Board meeting.

The board voted 4-3 to amend a nearly year-old rule and allow riders to use whips up to four times in succession in the final sixteenth of a mile before pausing to allow their mounts to respond. Current rules state that riders are allowed three strikes during a race before they must pause to allow horses to respond.

Hall of Fame induction for museum members only

Citing a high demand and limited available seating, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., will limit attendees to this year’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony to museum members only.

Parx: Six more clenbuterol positives for Preciado

Trainer Ramon Preciado, who has appealed a 270-day suspension for two clenbuterol overages at Parx Racing last fall, had six more clenbuterol positives at Parx between March 1 and April 12 of this year, according to rulings issued by the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission.

The six new clenbuterol overages were first reported by the Paulick Report.

NBC acquires rights to broadcast Royal Ascot starting 2017

NBC Sports Group, the parent company of the NBC Sports Network, will begin broadcasting live from Royal Ascot in England next year after acquiring the U.S. media rights to the prestigious meeting in a multi-year deal, the company announced on Saturday.

The network said it will broadcast from the meeting on five consecutive days next year, from 8:30 a.m. Eastern to at least noon each day. In addition to being broadcast on NBC Sports, the coverage will be streamed on the company’s various Internet and mobile platforms.

Preakness TV ratings rise 7 percent

The overnight rating for the race portion of the Preakness Stakes broadcast on NBC on Saturday evening was up 7 percent compared with the rating for the same portion of the broadcast last year, according to the network.

The overnight rating of 6.2 for this year’s Preakness, won by second-choice Exaggerator, exceeded the 5.8 posted for last year’s Preakness, which was won by American Pharoah en route to the first Triple Crown in 37 years. Share, which measures the percentage of television in use that are tuned to a broadcast, was a 14 this year, identical to the share last year.
