Another is an ex-trainer who recently made a quick fortune in the ship-repair industry. Another has owned two Kentucky Derby winners, including this year’s victor, Nyquist. Yet another is a 32-year-old Northern Kentucky pizza-joint owner who says he has never before had any investment of any kind in any racehorse ever.

Neuman will call September races at Los Alamitos

Bobby Neuman, a former track announcer at Calder, will call the races at the Los Angeles County Fair meeting at Los Alamitos in September, the track announced late Thursday.

Neuman replaces Frank Mirahmadi, who is calling at Monmouth Park in New Jersey.

Neuman, 47, has described races at venues as diverse as the Arizona fair circuit, The Downs at Albuquerque, and Thistledown as well as harness meetings at The Red Mile in Kentucky and Pompano Park in Florida.

The Los Alamitos September meeting runs from Sept. 8-25, with racing on a Thursday-through-Sunday schedule.

Handle on U.S. races rises sharply in July

Wagering on Thoroughbred races at U.S. tracks jumped 12.3 percent in July when compared with the same month last year, largely due to an increase in weekend dates, according to figures released Thursday by Equibase.

July of this year had 10 weekend dates, while July of last year had eight weekend dates. Wagering on weekends is far higher than betting on weekdays.

Churchill Downs Inc. second-quarter net income up 27 percent compared to 2015

Churchill Downs Inc., the racetrack, casino, and social-gaming company, had net income of $69.8 million in the second quarter on record second-quarter revenue of $438.5 million, according to financial statements released late on Wednesday.

All of Churchill’s operating segments had higher revenue than in the second quarter last year, according to the statements, though some of the gains were slight. The second-quarter net income figure was up 27 percent compared with the same figure for the second quarter in 2015, while revenue for the quarter was up 7 percent.

Business down from last year in most categories

DEL MAR, Calif. – Average attendance and ontrack handle declined compared with last year in the first third of the Del Mar summer meeting, through Sunday, but the track showed a gain in out-of-state handle during that time, according to data provided by track officials.

For 13 racing days from July 15 through Sunday, average ontrack handle declined 11.1 percent from $2,090,986 in 2015 to $1,857,956. Average all-sources handle, including revenue from satellite and account-wagering sources, was down 2.4 percent to $12,476,801.

Handle up 3.9 percent early in meet

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Despite much-needed rain that forced the cancellation of two days’ worth of turf racing, all-sources handle at Saratoga was up 3.9 percent through the first 10 days of the 2016 meet when compared with last year.

Ontrack handle, however, was down 7.2 percent.

All-sources handle was $165,398,558 through the first 10 days, compared with $159,069,259 wagered in 2015. Ontrack handle was $36,239,525, down from the $39,068,597 wagered in 2015.

Churchill Downs Inc. and a partner of the company, Saratoga Casino Holdings, have reached an agreement to purchase the Casino at Ocean Downs, a harness track and casino in Berlin, Md., Churchill announced late on Tuesday.

The Stronach Group completes purchase of Rosecroft

The Stronach Group said Tuesday that it has completed its purchase of Rosecroft Raceway from Penn National Gaming.

Rosecroft is located in Fort Washington, Md., south of Washington D.C. It is the Stronach Group's first harness track. A purchase price was not disclosed.

The Stronach Group owns the Maryland Jockey Club, which operates Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course, as well as Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park, Portland Meadows, and Golden Gate Fields.

The purchase of Rosecroft gives the Maryland Jockey Club a simulcast outlet near the nation's capital.
